FiOS TV on Staten Island -- When?

Does anybody have any idea when FiOS TV will be available on Staten Island? The installer last February guessed 2nd quarter, but I haven't heard anything so far.

Actually I would be interested in hearing what's going on with FiOS TV in NYC as a whole. Is the hold up political or technical? Why are all the little communities getting it first?

On a somewhat unrelated question, if your building is already wired for FiOS broadband does any additional work need to be done for FiOS TV? I ask because this is a fairly large multi-unit building, and there were some Verizon people doing some work last week, and I was told by the super that among other things they were "putting in bigger boxes in the basement". The building has been wired for FiOS broadband for some time, so maybe this was a preparation for FiOS TV?

Fios tv in New York City seems to be one of the world's great mysteries. Finding info out is my primary reason for being on this website.

I'm also on Staten Island and when I had Fios internet put in at the end of March, the installer also said June- late 2nd Quarter. Yet, there is not a sign around of anything actually happening.

Last August, the City Council okay'ed the City Dept of Info Tech and Telecommunications to negotiate with Verizon for TV services. That's the last of any real news.

The rumor mill is that the city wants the whole city to be ready for hookup, whereas Verizon says that would take years with all the multi unit housing around. Verizon wants to roll the tv out as they are ready to...which mean that we would be first since Staten Island is almost totally wired. There are some apartment buildings that aren't as well as some condo developments that haven't give Verizon permission to dig up parking lots to pull in the fiber.

Anyway, all we can do is wait and keep searching for a sign of anything coming.

I get asked this question dozens of times per day - no joke.
The truth of the matter is like oxfdblue says - it's a mystery.
No one seems to know for sure.

But......
Supplies are trickling in (HDMI cables, RCA adapters, coax attenuators....). And, storage logistics are being surveyed.

Hopefully we'll hear something soon.

Well, that's certainly a good sign. Let us know when the STB's start to arrive, then I think we can say it's coming right around the corner.

Thanks for the info.

Well, it's good to know that this is on the radar, and that something seems to be happening!

So can you answer my second question? If an apartment already has FiOS broadband (including the big wireless router), does anything else need to be done physically, either in the apartment or in the building as a whole, in order to receive FiOS TV?

One of the executives from Time Warner NYC stated in a news conference that the city will approve the TV franchise agreement for Verizon Fios around mid June. Time Warner has begun to offer 2 year contracts to its customers in order to retain them due to the Fios role out.

I had a feeling abou that two year contract stuff. I threw mine in the garbage. Not only do I plan to move to Fios for tv, but the savings one would get from Time Warner over two years amounted to little more then enough to buy a couple of large pizzas. Who wants to be locked in for two years for that?

Time Warner is viewing Fios as a major threat they have allready bumped up the roadrunner speed in SI to 10 mb and removed all analog channels in order to add more HD channels. The Central office's in New York city are set up for all Fios services including TV. ITS just political matters that are withholding the TV service.

If a building/apartment already has FiOS, then the majority of the work is done.
A technician will add the STB's and maybe change any sub-standard coax and/or splitters.

Ah, I got the 2yr lock-in flyer from TW too, and the first thing that crossed my mind was "FiOS TV???". This is very encouraging!

NYC won't see anything until 2008 for TV Franchise since all current ones expire then. Verizon will then be able to apply with the incumbents who go up for renewal.

I'm not following you here, UofMiamiGrad.
What would be the benefits of waiting until next year?

Isn't there an "application" currently being processed?

This is not the way I heard this.

Last year the City Council passed a resolution instructing the City Department of Information Tech (DOITT) to start negotiating a franchise agreement with Verizon for FiOS tv service.

They do not have to wait for the other cable franchises to expire. When they do, those companies will apply for new ones, but all are co-exist with FiOS. In other words, more than one choice for consumers.

There is no benefit, but I find it odd that Cablevision's agreements expire on Oct 8, 2008 & TWC all expire on Sept 16, 2008. It would seem that NYC apparently likes to have all the agreements start and terminate around the same time. That is the reason why I said not to expect anything until 2008. I hope I am wrong, but that is the basis for me saying that. RCN of course is an open video service and has an agreement with NYC that expires on Dec 29, 2012.
