Re: Futile

The only costs that go up are labor? Not quite. Technologies that aren't decade old actually cost more than the old stuff. (ie DSL vs FIOS)

So, do you think that any worker just ought to sit back and accept the lowest amount of money that a company would offer him or her? Should we all accept that big $10.43 that Fairpoint is offering for new employees at their new call center? Can you raise your family, pay your rent, move forward in any way possible with on $10 an hour? Keep in mind that K Mart, Mcdonalds, and the local grocerie store have starting pay at around $9 an hour.. so those that are installing, maintaining, and engineering the next generation internet systems in America should be paid as much as someone flipping a burger?

Re: Futile

Boston,
My god, why don't you people get it?! This is not about anyone's job. It is about the technological future of this whole region. Some of you seem to be so okay with with Fairpoint doing this.. They're just trying to make a buck, right? NO!
Look at their background, they were a company formed soley to make a profit. That does not transfer into anything at all that is good for the customer.
What if your cable company back in the 80's said they would offer no more than channels 2-12? What would you do? go to another cable company? No, they don't exist.. Fairpoint is doing the same thing... telling the VERY FEW without always on (I refuse to call their service "broadband") access that they will take care of them and screw the rest of us that have already had crappy DSL for years and years.
Are you living in Boston? If you are this does not affect you, so therefore you should not be posting in this forum. If you live in any of the affected areas that have DSL, then you should be ashamed of your shortsightedness. If you live in an area that does not have DSL then I would suggest that you move and get a new job

I live on the outskirts of boston. Sorry No DSL , No FIOS , barely can get an evdo signal in my house. But get this I have cable !

I like my job even though it doesn't pay as well as others
I have had , and I am looking for a new home my choice where I live.

You need to realize if VZ stays there your doomed to live with the same crappy service. VZ will not roll out to the area's where there is ROI they are there to make money , that's it.

Re: Futile

boston,
it's simple.. you don't know what you're talking about, I do. Have fun with your cable modem... FIOS will blow it away nearly everywhere within 5 years.

Do some research on the proposed NY landline sale a few years ago. Verizon said that they would not be able to afford even basic upkeep on such bad copper never mind the fact that they would NEVER get FIOS, that is why they wanted to sell. Well, they pulled out of the deal. If you check on that very same area now, it's cranking out FIOS in nearly every town...

That kind of blows up your little theory, huh?

Post the location so we can check it with FIOS.

Now before you go spouting I have worked on network design before WITH FIBER. These companies are not here to give people the shaft , they are here to make money and offer a competitive service.

I have worked with Verizon Sprint Tmobile and Cingular in the past working on capacity and network planning. When they first started rolling out EV-DO I was there to help implement and when e-911 became big I was there to help implement.

I know what I am talking about. These companies need to show an ROI or they get dumped in the stock bin. If they say the area is not profitable they are not lieing , they are trying to make themselves more profitable. Hell imagine that.

I hope Verizon throws your state the shaft,to force the companies hand at upgrading the area instead of selling it sounds like your state is setting yourself up for a nice kick in the pants when the service sounds and works like crap.

The proposed NY landline deal as far as I was told related to upstate NY , and the areas are hardly "cranking out" fiber.

Re: Futile

WOW, you worked for a couple of cell phone companies!.. I'm sorry that I thought you didn't know anything.. Now I KNOW you don't know anything. The equipment, fiber ring, software, and development of the Wireless side is a world away from what you will see in a landline office. (but I'm sure you knew that, right?)

Do your own research about upstate NY. I'm tired of walking you through this every day. Google it, find the communities that would have been affected, then google FIOS in those communities. You will see that I'm right, and you're wrong.....again.
