| reply to src1425 If your phone has a message light, it should be flashing whenever there's a new message(s). The message light is nice so that you don't have to pick up the phone from time to time to determine if there are new messages with the stuttering tone.
The problem in my case is that the message light only works sometimes, and there's no rhyme or reason why it does or doesn't work. My phone message light always worked when I had Bellsouth. But Comcast e-mail notification is very reliable, which is a nice feature when I'm on the road. |

One way is for the phone to automatically go "off-hook" a few seconds after you end a call, or after the phone rings without being picked up. If it "hears" a stutter dial-tone, the phone knows there is a message waiting and turns on the light.
A second way is to have a "command" sent over the phone wires in FSK format to turn the light on or off. This second method requires the phone company (or in this case, comcast and the modem) to support sending the FSK command.
The second way is much preferred over the first because it doesn't require the phone to go "off-hook" to detect the message waiting condition. Many phones are designed to use the off-hook method unless and until they receive an FSK command. This is to support phone systems that do not include the FSK commands. However, once the phone receives one FSK command to turn the light on or off, it knows the system supports that method and will stop doing the "off-hook" thing.
Maybe your phone/modem combination is weak with regard to the FSK commands, and sometimes works but sometimes doesn't.
Another possibility is if you have too many phones on the line. Many modems only support 5 phones max. If you have more than this, some may not ring, and maybe the FSK commands won't always get through.
Finally, maybe even if you have only two phones, and only one of them has a message waiting light, perhaps it isn't always able to decide when to pick up the phone to check (e.g. if you are on the other phone, maybe it confuses this phone).
Just some ideas. Good luck with solving your problem. |

| Thanks for your very informative post. I now have a better idea of how the message light works.
I only have one phone (made by GE), which is connected directly to my Arris 402P modem. Maybe there is some sort of compatibility problems between the two in regards to the stuttering tone and the message light. |
