Re: [TWC] NYC Slow Speeds I like how I spend about 30 min a day on these forums hoping that someone will find a solution to RR's poor service.. and now that I think about it I think they're the only ones that CAN fix it Nothing we do, or say will fix our situation :/ Let's just hope that fios will avaliable to all of the US states sometime soon lol |

1 edit | Time for a change This thread is full of evidence to help define the probable cause of the poor speed delivery by RoadRunner. Some of us are relatively unscathed and are getting good results. Many of us are experiencing time- related poor delivered speeds and often experiencing strangely bad pings. This has been going on since April and there is no resolution in sight.
Strangely, although RR claims that it must be our Wiring; our Modem; our Router; our internal Wiring and or our Computer, we have ample evidence to indicate that for most of us the answer is none off the above. Why do we know that? Because many of us report that under very narrow time related circumstances (such at 5 or 6 AM) and ONLY at those way off peak times, we do get excellent download speeds. This happens without our changing ANY of the elements that RR is suggesting are the problems. What does this mean?
To me this means that the problem very simply stated is that RR is failing to deliver. That failure is directly related to congestion on their network. Whether it is related to their routing plan, their network management efficiency, inadequacy in the capacity of their equipment, etc. is not material. They are not delivering for reasons that are their responsibility.
SO what can we do? We can test and verify that our own set up is not the culprit and then sit and wait because there is nothing else we can control to correct the problem. Since this is going on since April, Roadrunner is clearly in no hurry to solve the problem so we will probably be waiting for the foreseeable future.
I have previously counseled patience in this forum. I am no longer willing to follow that advice. I have ordered FIOS as a replacement for RoadRunner. (FIOS has been available in my neighborhood for some time, but I was reluctant to just dump RoadRunner without giving them a chance to correct the situation).
I promise to report back here on the experience I have with Verizon on the order, the installation and the commencement of service. Ill report the good and the bad without enhancement. -- regards,

Re: [TWC] NYC Slow Speeds Well, here goes!
Fios was installed today. Technician showed up just after 8:00 AM. Nice guy, friendly and informed. He took his time, worked neatly and frankly did a great job. (I was expecting some "agita", but really, there was none.)
Here is the first test I did on FIOS:

I'll report more when I have time (am at work.)
Here is a test from Speedtest.net

For comparison, here is a RoadRunner test from last evening:
(OOPS: I cannot get them because I am on a different IP address. It was about 2800 down and 460 up) -- regards,

| reply to SRF26 I have their "Double Play" (Internet and phone.) Internet at 20/5. It is $65/month combined for the first 7 months after a first month which is free. After the 8th month it will go up to $84 combined. The Internet portion is essentially $30 a month for the first 8 months and $49 thereafter.
I was previously paying $45 a month to TWC- Roadrunner for the Internet portion of the service. Internet speeds were supposed to be 10 Megs down/512K up in a combined plan with Cable TV. Problem is that since last April, we typically only got about half the RR download speed actually delivered.
For now I am maintaining TWC Cable TV because Verizon cannot offer FIOS TV in our area due to franchise licensing laws. -- regards,Lou |

Re: [TWC] NYC Slow Speeds (Good Bye to you all and Good Luck) We ordered Verizon Dual Play Internet and Phone FIOS via internet on Tuesday. 9/25. They offered installation date of Thursday. I chose to delay the installation date till Friday, 9/28. We received at least 3 calls from Verizon on Wednesday and Thursday confirming the installation date and making sure someone would be home.
The installation tech showed up at about 8 AM on Friday. He was friendly, communicative and professional. I asked him to install the ONT in my attic near where my current phone lines enter the house. He was more than happy to oblige my requests.
The total install took about 5 hours. Phone service was very momentarily interrupted as expected. He spent most of the time running the wiring and installing the equipment in my attic. He installed the router downstairs and a few moments later, internet service came on line. (We ordered the 20/5 service and generally get about 20.6 Megs down and 4.7 Meg up).
The only hitch was that he was unable to get his SW application to correctly provide me with my primary ID and Password (Used for user account maintenance and to set up the sub account email addresses and passwords. He tried several times and gave up. He gave me a customer service phone number to get help. It turned out to be the wrong number (DSL not FIOS service), but they routed me immediately and the service was excellent. All done in a ten minute call.
The free router has 4 hard wired 100 base ports and has wireless support with both WPA and WPA2, but they are set up default to WEP. No big deal for informed users to adjust to personal preferences.
So in summary: We suffered along with many of you since last April with sporadic service and congested Roadrunner facilities, poor customer service and a lack of improvements. We were reluctant to change because of the pain of change and because we realize that all services occasionally stumble. We gave Roadrunner 6 full months to straighten itself out and it did not.
The cost of change was nominal. Installation and the new router were free. The cost is lower first year because of the discounts. Thereafter, it is about on par. The actual pain of making the change was surprisingly little. Frankly If I knew it would be this easy and trouble free I would have switched months ago.
I am posting this not to gloat, but to inform the readers of this thread. I do hope for those of you with no choice but Roadrunner that they fix their problems soon and provide you with decent service. For those of you with choice, you now have an example of how the switch went for someone else. Perhaps it will encourage you to make the move.
For those of you left with Roadrunner: I hope that my defection and those of others who can and do switch will send a strong message to the management of the Roadrunner Service at Time Warner-NYC. If they lose enough customers (And you know that they at least watch those statistics because they tie to revenues) they will inevitably take corrective action and finally provide better service to those of you who dont choose to switch or do not have an alternate choice.
This is my familys Declaration of Independence from Roadrunner. Our best wishes to you all.
Good Bye and Good luck! -- regards,Lou |

Re: [TWC] NYC Slow Speeds I am writing Dick Parsons, Time Warner's CEO, as we speak. His address is:
Mr. Richard Parsons Chief Executive Officer Time Warner 1 Time Warner Center New York, NY 10019
Here is the text of my letter. Feel free to use as a draft. I am also going to paste my letter in the TWC contact form, which is here: »www.twcnyc.com/index2.cfm?c=cust···_us_kana
Dear Mr. Parsons:
I am writing to bring to your attention a serious matter which I am seeking to get resolved immediately.
My family has been Time Warner customers for 8 years. Personally, I have been with your company for one year. I pay roughly $140 for your cable and internet (Road Runner) services.
Over the past few weeks, I have been experiencing serious network issues with your internet service during peak times between the hours of 8 PM and 12 AM. In this window, my ping times to servers are extremely high and my bandwidth is also negatively affected.
For your information, I have attached several items to prove my case. The first is a traceroute of a New York IP at 10:30 PM on October 2. The second is a traceroute of the same IP at 8:30 AM on October 3. You can clearly see the difference.
This seems to not be an individual issue but a neighborhood issue. Your nodes on the Upper West Side seem to be overcrowded during these peak times. Simply put, your infrastructure does not seem to be able to handle your userload. Other people in my area have complained about this as well. For your information, I have attached several pages of forum posts from dslreports.com, one of the most respected online communities for consumer broadband, where your customers report and discuss this very same problem.
I am asking you to please get back to me as soon as possible with information on how you plan to solve this problem and with a timeline of when I can expect this issue to be resolved.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I can be reached at any time at (917) 359-7757.
Sincerely,
Dan J. Berger |
