Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness

Okay- here's a ? for the folks in the DE / PA area.
Ever since our big issue Sunday - which appears to now be corrected, is anyone noticing that the HD channels don't look as sharp as what they were?

Almost, and I hate saying this, that they dropped the resolution they're being sent at? (Ala DISH and DirecTV??) Could this have been a cause to Sunday's issue???

I can't help but look at every HD channel and today (and last night) it doesn't look as sharp as it used to - almost grainy.

I may also be crazy...lol..so tell me what you think.

To be honest, no I didn't see that. Granted, I watched very little TV since the pixellating happened, and only a fraction of THAT was HD, but the HD I watched looked no different than it had in the past.

I know this has nothing to do with DE, but honestly since they added the new HD stations in the VA Beach market, the PQ of all the HD stations do not look as good as before they added them.

Hello,

My wife mentioned last night the HD picture looked cloudy.

H8-
Thanks for the feedback. It really was / is noticeable. Was watching "Good Eats" on Food HD last night - just didn't look as "popping" as usual.

Then surfing through the rest of the HD's - they just all seemed more dull and a bit grainy - kind of the way they looked on DISH Network when they down-res the HD signal (and don't send enough bandwidth).

I'm wondering if something happened with the encoders on Sunday - and in order to fix it - they had to alter the HD signal levels - of course this is all just me throwing out possible scenarios - but things really don't look as good as they did before the Sunday fiasco.

JeepMatt,

No, you're not crazy. . My wife watches lots of TV and would know the difference. I saw the stutter on TNT HD, but not other channels so I will reset the HD MRDVR.(Thanks) FSC has to fix it like it was before Sunday's fiasco. It pissed me off I could not watch the Subway Series without the drop outs. The time I do watch TV, it breaks. Just my luck.

This issue is continuing.

Food and HGTV HD are both much softer than before Sunday's "issue" and HBO HD and Movie Channel HD are extremely grainy.

This will really be a disappointment if they tinkered with how these channels are being sent.

Can anyone else tune into these channels in the area?

H8verizonDSL - get your wife's feedback again.

*edit* - after watching even further - you now even see blurring during fast motion scenes. I NEVER saw this on the HD's prior to this past Sunday. This is what I saw on DISH Network when they were either not sending the channels at full resolution, or, they were not allocating enough bandwidth to the station. SOMETHING was changed either at Philly, or here at my CO - but definitely the quality has decreased.

Jeep, I am hoping that they are still repairing the original equipment that failed, and this is only temporary. I see exactly the same thing with the HD picture not being as sharp. Something in the new setup is definitely throttling the HD bit rate. They use a fancy Juniper Networks rack frame to distribute the video from the SHE to the local headends, and to the CO. It's an ERX-1440 broadband router frame at the CO and local Headend if I recall, not sure about the particular unit at the SuperHeadend though. One of the channel cards must have gone bad, there are various options available so you might be able to figure if they used an alternate bandwidth cart on a temporary basis, and be able to replace the full rate card when they get a new or rebuilt unit.
More info if you want too look: »www.juniper.net/products_and_ser···dex.html

Of course we will all suffer another service disruption when they switch back to the original configuration.

I can't wait until this weekend to see if they turn out the lights at 5PM Friday, and pretend they won't have a problem.

Thanks KA-
I think you nailed it. I have a ticket opened - but if you feel like helping via contributing a thread in the Direct forum, naturally i'd appreciate it.

Hey JeepMatt,

My wife noticed when watching TNT HD NBA last night, the court does not have the polished look like it used to. I watched portions of the game and noticed the court shine flickers. We would like this fixed ASAP.

Yeah H8 - they all look like stretched SD channels now. I'm really upset.

Their first reply was - the Network Team looked at the HD channels and they were "fine".

Now that I Have more ammo to give them - I hope I get a real answer this time.

I won't know though until this afternoon at the earliest, as Gustavo is in CA and doesn't start the Direct threads until the PM.

I don't have a HD box so I'm missing out on all the fun it seems. Shame.

They (network technicians) always initially say things are "fine" even when there's a problem until you raise a big stink about the problem. (See: the HBO VOD problem that I was experiencing, and I'm still experiencing, and will apparently continue to experience until August).

Maybe it's time for a bunch of users here to file complaints with the presidential appeal/complaint number about the crappy service around the Philly area?

I might file a complaint about the VOD service in general. It is like watching a you tube video with all the compression/encoding. Where is all this bandwidth we hear about?
