Well, I watched the launch tonight - sorry guys but I just don't see the problem. The picture quality on my TV was simply amazing. I saw none of the blocking or crawling that you described. At first I thought I saw some artifacts while they were showing the announcers - it looked, not really grainy, but something in the background. Then I realized something "holy crap... that's netting behind them - this picture is so clear I can see the netting behind those guys!" That's clearly what it was - maybe some kind of mosquito netting - the fact that I could see that still really astounds me.

I also watched Invincible on Starz HD tonight. Again, it looked simply amazing. I don't know what to tell you guys, but I just don't see the problems you're seeing. I'll keep an eye out over the next several days (hopefully when the Verizon crew comes out to Matt's place on Monday they'll get whatever the problem is resolved).

JPL, yes, the mosquito netting made the background look like canvas, and you could even see some of those monster size mosquito's sitting on the screen, just waiting to get a bite to eat. I don't dispute that the HDNet picture looks better than SD does, but some of the shots off the water seem to have a grainy effect, The vapor trail from the shuttle, and the blue sky beyond the launch pad had the same effect. A still image looks almost perfect, it literally looks like you can reach out and touch it. I still don't understand why some people see it and some don't. I guess I'll wait and see what the Video Engineers at Verizon find out at Jeepmatt's place, I am sure that they will be here too before the end of the week.

I have my DVR loaded with lots of examples of the problem, and the tech that was here saw it too. All the signal levels are 'perfect' according to Verizon's specs.

I see the problem to a lesser degree on 2 smaller CRT screens(27" and 20"), but my 40" LCD makes it real ugly. My kids have a 14" color and a 17" B/W set(40 years old, vacuum tubes and all), and the problem has been on and off visible on those TV's. Swapping between the DVR and the Cablecard makes no difference, but both devices are made by Motorola. A 6416 DVR, and a MediaCipher Cablecard, so it could be a Motorola specific issue. Maybe a firmware update is needed???

I just find it odd that this problem arose immediately after Verizon's acknowledged equipment failure on May 20th.

I focused alot on when things started to move - e.g. the vapor trail behind the shuttle as it took off - because of what you wrote. I focused alot on the water behind the shuttle (all I saw were waves in the background - I even got real close to the screen during those shots, and didn't see the effect that you're talking about), and I really didn't see anything grainy about the sky behind the shuttle.

I'm also baffled as to why some are seeing this and others are not. I'm sure Verizon is baffled too, which is why they're going through the contortions that they are to try to isolate exactly where the problem seems to be happening (I still believe that's what they're trying to do).

Luckily my SD's are still looking awful this afternoon...

BBC America - every time someone would walk by the logo in the bottom right of the screen, it breaks up and becomes distorted. Decided to DVR that to show them tomorrow as well.

Logo - the people's faces in the movie on right now look like blocky messes - they run on the beach and their body image bleeds...

Something else i've gathered over these 3 weeks - it seems to get worse variably. This morning, it didn't look as bad - now this afternoon, much much worse.

Oddly enough, I replayed the HDNet coverage of the Shuttle launch, and the PQ looks better than the live HDNet broadcast was.
This whole PQ issue does not make any sense.

Why would the recording look better than the Live Broadcast???? I see a degradation of the SD picture now. But some of the HD recordings actually look up to par.
This is on the same TV with the same HDMI connection.
Plus, I can still see the problem on separate TV sets. Various CRT's ranging from 27", 20", with an S-Video connection, and down to 17", and 14", with an RF connection.
I can't explain it, I can't figure out what is causing it, but I can't wait until someone can fix it.

And why am I up at 2AM obsessing over it???

G'night all!!!

Man...leave us hanging why don't you? I keep refreshing, and there's no update.

Then again, the way things are going the finale to this thread may be just a blank screen with no sound and no resolution.

So Jeep, did the techs arrive at 9 am? Have you taken the day off?

It was less expensive to whack JeepMatt then resolve the issue or pay customer service to deal with it. Next on the hit list - KA3SGM. Don't answer the door.

Nah, I think they just got tired of his griping on this forum, so they pulled his internet connectivity too

So in other words they can't do anything and they don't know what's wrong?

Whoa - are you kidding me? Time to close the thread? What is it this week with huge build ups and no resolutions?

For weeks this was the most important issue ever, now "it is what it is?"

Should we be reading "user error - seek ISF calibration" between the lines here? What are we missing?

I've gotta agree with you, knarf. I've taken this issue seriously - so much so that I played and replayed HD recordings, and tried to make note of differences in HD PQ, from one show to the next, I've manipulated all my settings just to see if I could reproduce what you guys were seeing, et. al. Matt, I think we need to hear what the resolution is. After calling everyone to arms for this issue, I think we need to hear what the problem was - or if they just don't know then I think we need to hear that too.

How could you accept their answer when you know something is wrong?
And what was the answer?

is there any possibility that its source feed related and weather - heat in this case - related?

I know around here in fall and winter pict quality sours but craters out in the late spring summer when the temps start to break into the 90's and the thunderstorms lightning wreaks havoc.....

just my two cents worth...
