| reply to JeepMatt Re: Decrease in HD "Sharp"ness
OK, I have been checking the HD picture this evening. I still see lots of artifacting. Especially in darker areas of the screen. Picture still has a somewhat washed out look.
Does anyone else see the problem?

| I haven't watched any HD this evening, but it looked great earlier today - I was watching Food HD for a good chunk of the afternoon. It's clear that Verizon is doing something with their equipment. For what reason I have no idea. I was just happy to have a Sunday afternoon with zero pixellation. |

| JPL, I was watching MHD and you could see the screen crawling in the dark areas of the screen. When they fade a scene to black there is a definite artifacting.
I'm looking at Monster House on Starz-HD right now and it looks like I'm watching YouTube.

| reply to KA3SGM Seeing it here. . . I'm watching the nba game on TNT HD. Dark areas have a "snowy" effect.
Though it does seem to come and go.
I've been subscribed for 10 days now, Wish I would have waited. I am however thrilled with the Fios internet which I have had for about 5 months. |

| reply to JeepMatt Ok guys,
here are some facts about the standard def and High def video. A standard def takes about 4.5 megs bandwidth and high def takes anywhere between 13 megs to 15 megs bandwidth. Now the question is if your FIOS account is 15 megs total bandwidth, then you can only watch high def on one TV in the house and it should definitely effect your internet.
Unless verizon is doing compression which will cause quality issues and if they are doing 12 meg high def streams then regardess of any physical issues fiber or bandwidth wise your quality will suck wich I believe thats what verizon is providing for their high def video streams. |

@verizon.net | Umm, no... this is not done over the same "virtual pipe" as internet. Internet speeds should not be affected, and FiOS quality has nothing to do with your FiOS internet bandwidth. |

| reply to jalfred jalfred, yea, I think they might still be having a problem, they seem to have 'tweaked' the Quality Of Service settings to get the HD to look a little better. Or maybe not....
The color looks more 'true to life', but there is lots of artifacting, which is more common to the SD channels, when viewed on a big screen. The HD picture still looks grainy.
The darker colors, especially black, have a distinct 'blocking effect'.
When a scene fades to black, it leaves a distorted 'blocked digital shadow'.
I'm paying more than $200month, and my HD looks like YouTube! -- We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat! |

| KenAF, yes, there is a trouble ticket open. Verizon is investigating.
Still waiting on an answer though.

2 edits | KA- I also agree on your theory. Same thing here at my house. It's better - but still not the same.
I'd say we're still not back on the primary yet.
Obviously not expecting anything new today w/ the holiday - but yes, it's now been a full week - and we're still not back in business.
I'm just a little irked though that i was lied to last thursday when the Network group said things were "fixed". Now I see how they "fixed" it. |

| KA- Actually, quality looks like shit this morning.
HGTV HD - any fast movement - screen gets all grainy and snowy
SD channels, DIY, Fine Living - people's faces are all blurry.
This is rediculous. Whatever backup we're on - the available bandwidth is minimal.
The VOD actually looks clearer than some of the channels right now. -- "ONE team - ONE city - ONE dream!!" |

| reply to IPVideoGUY Bob 324 has it right. FiOS Internet has nothing to do with FiOS video quality unless, you talking about VOD which is delivered on the data stream since it is IPTV. VZ uses three separate spectra of light to provide FiOS service. One frequency carries data/voice upstream. One carries data/voice downstream and the third frequency carries the downstream video signal that is NOT compressed at all. By the way I have had FiOS for 4 weeks now and the PQ is fantastic. I haven't noticed any PQ loss. I'm in SE PA so, I'm served out of the same VHO as KA3SGM and JeepMatt. Anyway hopefully it is fixed fast! |

1 edit | reply to jalfred Jalfred- In our area, yes - there are extended periods of good product.
I've been a TV subscriber since 1/4 - it's usually perfect.
Then, the Philly area headend started having random pixellation issues - would happen every other weekend, sometimes on a weeknight...
Then, 2 Sundays ago - major pixellation happened ALL DAY and was not fixed until overnight. Ever since then, the temporary "fix" they did to stop the pixellation is now eating into the channel quality. It's a shame.
Had a huge BBQ yesterday - showed a bunch of people FIOS TV when the storms blew through - and I was asked, "wow - I thought HD is supposed to look much sharper?" I then had to explain what's going on.
All I want from the FSC and the Video Network team is the ETA when we'll be placed back to our original state.
As KA mentioned earlier, they did additional tweaks to try and make the HD nicer - but it's not even worth it - and now, it's degrading the quality of SD channels as a result.
Turn on DIY or Fine Living - the people's faces are all blurry. Fiber optic TV isn't supposed to look like You Tube. |

| JeepMatt I install fios services in Va and have not noticed the degradation of PQ so it maybe a area problem. However I have noticed that it maybe a feed problem to all aspects of tv streams as i have direct tv and it has been looking like s@#t lately lots of artifacts, pixelations, motions movement problems basketball from TNT has just been atrocious, and the only HD channel that looks good right now is HDNET which does not really show anything.
So i wonder could it not be a VZ transmission problem persay but a network feed problem being feed to the players in the game? |

| reply to JeepMatt Well, it's almost 11PM on Monday. I have been looking at all the channels, and it seems worse than ever. (JMHO)
HGTV-HD looks stretched and grainy, as does Food-HD. The Tudors on Showtime-HD looks almost like I am watching YouTube. The SD channels are experiencing a wicked amount of artifacting on anything that has rapid motion, or dark colors.
I did the A-B switch between the Fios HD local stations and the off-air antenna, and there is a big difference.
Off-air looks awesome, local-HD looks like the SD channels used to be. SD local channels have that grainy crawling "pixelated" look.
I hope this is not a permanent fix. Is anyone else still seeing the same thing? -- We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat! |

1 edit | Same here KA.
If this isn't fixed by the end of this week, I'm emailing all of the Philly papers and TV stations regarding this issue. I'm sure Comcast would love to know about it.
So hey VZ - since you do read this board - stop lying to us - get this fixed - and it'll all be happiness and sunshine again. -- "ONE team - ONE city - ONE dream!!" |
