| Re: Windows Live & Qwest
No thank you. I don't want MSN and I definitely don't want Windows live. I can take care of my computer so much better with a basic browser, no overlay portals, and definitely no intrusive software. There isn't one thing that MSN or Windows live can do for my system, PC, or network that can improve it that I can't do better. Later... Mike... |

| reply to cscottm One thing that is cool about this new portal to live is that you can get up to nine email addresses with the 'q.com' domain. One letter +.com is pretty cool, and the 'good' addresses haven't been snapped up (yet), except (of course) for the nine that I just registered!
Hopefully the spammers won't have 'q.com' in their lists for at least a little while. |

| reply to christcorp I won't try to start a debate, as I would probably lose.
So far, I can say that I haven't had any problems using one care on my system & the few other machines in the family I installed it on, I haven't heard any problems. Now however I did try it on my parent & law's computer and they didn't like it, as they felt it wasn't finding all the viruses. However when I originally installed it, there machine already had a bunch of viruses on it & yes they were running virus software already.
Anyways, if & when I do come across a problem, I won't have any problems on uninstalling it & trying something else. |

My favorite part is this
"Note: Only for current subscribers to Qwest Connect® with MSN® Premium (formerly known as Qwest Connect® with MSN® Premium)"

There are a good amount of 'idiot' users in the world who would rather just do that then try to learn the magical way's you already have.
My grandma would be one that would be better off with this, then using other programs. It just confuses her more and she (although not terribly old yet) just doesn't have the time to learn what others have learned with the time they had (she owns her own business).
Granted, in my case I don't need Live onecare either but I'm not gonna go around blasting people for using the program if they feel they are better off using it. |

This has absolutely nothing to do with how smart I am or anyone else involved in these conversations. We are not talking about your Grandmother. People who can surf the web, find forums like this, contribute and participate, fall into a totally different category than your grandmother.
Your grandmother is NOT an idiot. Unless you want to call her one. Your grandmother happens to be ignorant. There is nothing wrong with being ignorant. It just means that she doesn't know. And in her case, that me be perfectly acceptable. That isn't who we are talking about here. We are in a forum. A forum is a place where people have taken the initiative to NOT be ignorant. This is where people come to educate themselves and be more informed of the task in front of them. Whether it's Qwest dsl, PC's, automotive, guns, etc... People who have enough savvy and knowledge to explore these forums, and skilled enough to learn better options.
I will NEVER refer to anyone directly as an idiot. I definitely don't consider cscottm to be an idiot. I also take offense to anyone on the forum(s) being referred to as an idiot. The plain fact that they have found their way to a forum and is willing to learn other options, choices, methods, procedures, how to's, etc... automatically makes them NOT an idiot.
Now, as far as WIndows live, qwest connect, Norton's, McAfee, AOL, and some other choices people have made, I just want to say that there are much better options. These better options are less intrusive on your PC's. They give the user more control so that this intrusive software doesn't interfere with other software applications and hardware. These other options put the user back in control instead of the software being in control. There is nothing that says a person has to take one of these other options. They may decide that the convenience of a software apps that includes virus, spam, firewall, security, remote access troubleshooting, etc... outweigh the cost and freedoms lost. That is fine. Just like some people choose to go with these "Triple Play" type deals where Broadband, Phone, Cellular, TV, etc... are bundled because they like the convenience. They are willing to give up the freedom of changing providers on a particular service or realizing that these bundled service are almost Always more expensive than buying the services separately. Again this is their choice.
My question was simple. I wanted to know what moved the original poster to go this route instead of separate apps that would provide him with getting the best of each area for less money and be more effective. He stated, through contextual clues, that it was more convenient for him. That's fine. That's why many manufacturers like Norton's make arrangements with new PC companies. They know it's convenient and some customers want that. Choosing this way does NOT make cscottm or anyone else an idiot. An idiot is someone who knows there are other ways to do something; doesn't want to know or research the other ways; doesn't care if there are better way; etc... and simply keeps their head in the sand.
cscottm is not an idiot. He knows there are other options. He has looked at the pros and cons of the options. He has chosen the option that fit his needs. Nothing wrong with that. Your grandmother is also NOT an idiot. She is ignorant. She probably doesn't know that there are other options. She probably thinks that the way she is surfing is the same that everyone else in the world does it. She doesn't know that there are other options. Depending on her needs, you may not have a need to explore other options. She is fine.
I'm sure you didn't mean to call anyone an idiot. Or maybe, your definition of an idiot is different than mine. Either way, I wanted to make it quite clear that your opinion that implied, however subtle, that I was being arrogant or somehow "Above" some other people, was totally off base. I value knowledge and learning above all things other than God and family. With knowledge comes freedom, wealth, and power. The more interaction we have, the more we all learn. Later... Mike.... |

Are these q.com email accounts available for pop email? It is about the only interesting thing about Windows live but as usual for Microsoft, I haven't been able to find any documentation for q.com accounts.
From what I've found it appears to be proprietary web mail. yuk |

| If it is an msn account, and you get their email account, then you can use it as a web based email with msn, you can also use it with Hotmail (Last time I checked), AND according to the DSL help section at qwest.com »www.qwest.com/internethelp/msn/mail.html#1 It says you can configure you Outlook to do your msn mail. It says:
How do I configure Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 to send and receive my MSN Mail manually?
1. From the Outlook Express Tools menu, select Accounts. 2. Select Add, then select Mail. 3. Type the name that you want message recipients to see when they receive messages from you. 4. Select I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use, and then type your MSN account name (your account name@msn.com). Select Next. 5. Select HTTP as the server, and then select Other as the provider. Select Next. 6. For Account Name, type your MSN account name (your account name@msn.com). 7. Type your MSN password and select Next. 8. Select Finish. 9. When prompted to download folder information, select Yes to continue. The first time you check e-mail, your folder information will download with your e-mail.
It is configured as an http mail account instead of POP, but it can still be configured to use outlook or any other email program that can have http servers. Later... Mike... |

Now for the discussion earlier, not at once did I feel like I was being called an idiot, moron, etc. I felt like I was being asked a decent question, on why I would want to use something like one care. Mainly one of the main reasons for ME to use it, is that I was able to set it up for everything that I needed. I have tried other programs & for some reason the configuration on some parts didn't want to work right for me.
