| reply to Just Bob That review a month old! Why not publish the results of AV-Test.org latest tests just released TODAY? I suppose because while KAV did great...it isn't number one in the tests? The best desktop product is AVK with Avira number two. Kaspersky is number 5.
If you want some strong reactions...well those will be regarding NOD32 and F-Prot scores on AV-Test.org latest tests.

| reply to Mele20 When you say that AV-Test just released the latest tests today I was looking but couldn't find any. lol Then I noticed your link was to PCMag. AV-Test does not release tests. It tests for magazines. Paid testing. Beyond that I wonder why there is such a difference in ratings between the tests performed by the same vendor but published by different magazines? PCWorld vs PCMag.
The ratings are different though. |

PCWorld vs PCMag. The ratings are different though. The tests were different and used a different test bed. The PC Magazine test uses only current malware 600,000 samples and did not test for how well the AV cleaned the problem.
Here's more breakdown by category of malware. NOD32 and F-Prot scores are really puzzling. Both are completely off other recent testing.

Unless more then one computer was used running Fx 2.0 I would not put to much stock in that slowdown percentage.
Test KAV on 50 computers running 2.0 and if you see the same slowdown and I might believe it. -- My browser and email client of choice are Firefox & Thunderbird.

  StatsRock
@pacbell.net | Statistically, you do not need to run it on 50 computers for it to be a valid data.
If all the software is tested on the same machine and/or configuration, then a 24% slowdown is valid as long as you compare to the other AV's test results. |
|
Grail Knight Who Dares Wins Premium join:2003-05-31 | True, providing all tests were run on the same computer.
You will have to ask PC-World if the same computer was used to run all tests. |

| Although I am not currently using it, Avast Home is an excellent AV and has improved. It has always been the AV I go to when I am not sure which one I want to use.
FWIW I am using Avira Premium and F-Secure IS on my two computers.

1 edit | reply to Just Bob Thanks for actually posting facts in this thread (that's not the case in other threads on AV). One well-known AV tester you haven't mentioned, which unlike av-test.org actually publish their results, is: »www.av-comparatives.org/ . Be sure to look at the TWO latest tests since they test different things.
I think all of these results are interesting, including PC World. But one has to be aware how the tests are done - they are only valid for a short time (probably days). And their ranking is based on different aspects.
What I really want is not to see which AV is THE best THIS month, but rather an assessment which AV is to trust, based on AV tests for the last year or so. I mean, for example an AV at av-comparatives.org may well drop from top-ranking to below average from one test to the next, but if the AV is basically good and the staff behind it know what they're doing, then it will probably be back on top in the next test. I'm not about to change AV every month due to which was No.1 in the latest test, unless it has a major flaw or is very sluggish in updating.
This also means that I think it's no big point to say this one is number 1 and this one is only number 5 - I'd rather say "the ones with figures above 95% are all very good" when looking at a specific test, and beyond that, to weigh it against other tests, and other aspects like false positives, proactive defence, system slowdown and ease of use.
Regarding F-Secure: I tried that a couple of years ago - what a tremendeous resource hogger, it runs about a dozen processes (compared to KAV6 which has 2)! I'm using KAV6 with no problems. |

It is not for consumers. Thought I'd look into this when the test came out, and after submitting all my personal info, found out I wasn't eligable due to not having 25 or more computers. All the home user gets is a proxy to run the browser though. Guess that will stop a few things getting in. Adding another proxy isn't a good thing here.
