| reply to JSRoman Re: Why won't BlackBerry die yet?
Well....i was looking for a bit more informed argument...but i'll bite:
That phone looks absolutely disgusting....too wide and short, and i believe i've seen it before - isn't it like an inch thick?
Really...what's the fascination with blackberry?
Have you ever tried a windows smartphone?
I've tried blackberry (we have a 7100i here on a full nextel plan) and i don't like it. I'm not alone - no one in my office wants to use the damn thing.
First....to tether it to a laptop we have to use some half assed kludge, with software on the laptop and use a proxy server to use any data service.
At that - it's slow as hell.
My blackjack has a single program to run (on the phone, which i can close after i click "ok" and still use the phone), and after that I can use BT DUN or a USB cable, and i'm online.
We have had nothing but problems with our blackberry mail "bridge" - whereas with Exchange and windows mobile - it "just works".
I'm usually far from someone to prefer the microsoft solution over the alternatives - but in this case - after i saw my contacts instantly synced between my email address and phone, and vise-versa - within 10 seconds - I was hooked. |

| An inch think? I think you have it confused with this- »www.bcellphones.com/images/brickphone.jpg
I'm sure the windows smartphones are good products but I guess it depends on who you ask since most of my friends pointed me towards BB over Windows Smart phones. In my case I like the feel of the 8700 over the 7100 style and 7290. 7290 is very wide and hard to crasp unless you have hands like King Kong. The 7100 style is thick and too tall IMO. I guess it depends what you like.
Can't comment on tethering since I've never had to use that feature and it cost a ton thru Cingular.Syncing is relatively quick with pc.
The Blackjack is also very good but when it came out I had already purchased 8700. -- »www.seabee.navy.mil |

1 edit | Ton through cingular?
It's not widely publicized, but they can't tell weather your using the data on the phone or tethered. The plans also aren't very well publicized, but there's a way to get cheap data. I pay $15/mo for unlimited data plan AND 200 text messages. My monthly bill is under $100.

no 3G. And all for just $200 from cingular?!?! No thanks. |

| I love my Pearl BB. And I sometimes use it tethered (on the advice of a TMobile tech support rep when I was having difficulty with their laptop card). It works great, is speedy, and the size of a regular cell phone. And unlimited data for $20/month whether through the phone or laptop.
I've never had email or content problems on the BB system, which I administer for our firm. Every BB device has worked flawlessly, from the clunky BlueBerries to my new Pearl.
Some will like BB; others will like Windows Mobile. To each their own. |

| reply to fcisler The problem with Windows Mobile phones is that you have to configure them like you would a PC. If that's the case I'd just use VoIP and my mini laptop.
BlackBerry - at least the Pearl does the set up so clean and efficient that you forget that you had to do anything at all. They have a dedicated function for setting up push email REGARDLESS of whether you're using Exchange, BIS, or just a personal POP3 account. That was the beauty of it.
I've got both the MDA and a Dash, and they both suck in comparison. The keypads are cramped on both, I'm constantly having to reboot them due to all these programs that don't like to close on their own without me babysitting Task Manager, and the "push" email is inconsistent. Sometimes it only works when I'm near my Wi-Fi, sometimes it always works, sometimes it doesn't work period. Plus I was forced to use Mail2Web, because it requires an Exchange account for the push. Well guess what? Personal email doesn't HAVE Exchange, it's either POP3 or IMAP.
So when I see Blackberry easily supporting POP3 email pushing, plus it's fast, efficient, great on battery use and uptime, and the word recognition is frighteningly accurate, then I look at my Dash and I'm spending more time fixing and configuring it than actually using it, I can't help but favor Blackberry. Fully intend to get that newer one on T-mo.
PS, most people who hate BlackBerry are thinking of the old style BB's - your 7200 and 7500 series. Trust me - it's evolved tremendously. Wi-Fi will only further emphasize its superiority in terms of productivity. |
