Unfortunately, no program is 100 percent effective. For that reason, you might want to use a limited account for surfing the web or use dropmyrights as DavidR on the avast forum recommends.

I don't recall ever seeing an anti-malware software with the guarantee of 'you will never ever for the rest of your life have to concern with a piece of malware infecting your machine'. Good luck with that one.

| Re: What is your Anti-Virus, Spyware/Adware protection setup? said by dadkins :*TO ME* cookies are irrelevant. They're harmless.
This isn't always the case. There exists a small number of malware/virus/worms type programs that will deposit a cookie onto a machine to see how often the cookies are cleared. If the cookie remains after a certain amount of time, then the next opportunity the malware/virus/worms type program to run on the machine, it will at least make the attempt to run and do it's dirty work. That said, cookies are sometimes helpful and deleting all your cookies all the time could leave you to always have to enter access codes to your favorite websites. Which is just darn inconvenient sometimes. So what to do? I myself use a batch file to save my useful cookies and delete all other cookies that I might not know what their functions are. Then restore the saved cookies.

If the cookie remains after a certain amount of time, then the next opportunity the malware/virus/worms type program to run on the machine, it will at least make the attempt to run and do it's dirty work. That doesn't seem to make any sense. Why would a malware file care how often any cookies are deleted, or want to determine this information before executing? What difference would that make to the malware? That said, cookies are sometimes helpful and deleting all your cookies all the time could leave you to always have to enter access codes to your favorite websites. Which is just darn inconvenient sometimes.
So what to do?
I myself use a batch file to save my useful cookies and delete all other cookies that I might not know what their functions are. Then restore the saved cookies. That seems like a lot of trouble. You may want to try Firefox. In my Firefox configuration, all cookies are outta here (disallowed to begin with) other than the ones I specifically allow. And I can save those or not from session to session, depending upon my preference.

1 edit | I use NOD32 with Sygate firewall on my XP Pro box. I also run an occasional scan with Spybot S&D. I don't use anything on my Ubuntu box....because it doesn't need it.
-edit- I also utilize a wrt54g router with DDWRT firmware with firewall.

Must agree that I do not recall either...of ever seeing any anti malware program that offers a 100% guarantee.....an if one actually did I would I sure as heck would know its not telling the truth. Its just not possible for any anti malware program to give such a guarantee. Without going into details of my set-up....I have found that using a virtual computer offers a layer of protection because upon re-booting the computer returns to its orginal clean state. But virtual computers are not for everyone...sure they are easy enough to use.....but I certainly do not run in virtual mode all the time....an yet, considering how corrupt the internet has become as well as how malware vendors tactics are forever changing....I would not seriously question if the time will come when we are forced to use virual computers.

| I run Avira AntiVir PE Classic on a limited user account in Windows XP. I don't run a software firewall or antispyware, and my system has not been compromised since I set it up this way several years ago.
I'm behind a Linksys WRT54G, so I am provided inbound protection by NAT and the SPI firewall.
I subscribe to the Leo Laporte school of thought when it comes to software firewalls. I know that bothers some people, but it has worked well for me. I encourage everyone to find a solution that works best for them and stick to it. Just because this method works for me does not mean it is the end-all solution for everybody. In short, to each his own.
I use common sense when web browsing and make sure that all of my software is up-to-date with the latest security patches available.
However, when I set up a computer for a friend or family member, I do run additional software: Avast! Antivirus, Spybot S & D with immunization, SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender. I provided instructions on how to use this software before I consider the job "complete." -- Been around the world and found That only stupid people are breeding The cretins cloning and feeding And I don't even own a TV.

| I'm wondering too... As dadkins asked, what adware are we talking about?
Beyond that, what browser are you using? If it's IE, consider using Firefox or Opera (except for Windows Updates.) They aren't perfect (as noted above, nothing is) but when all 3 are ran in their default setups, they are safer from drive-by's than IE is.

| Even though this topic has come up numerous times here in this forum, given the way malware seems to be changing, it is worth a repost every few months or so.
My current setup is Avast 4.7, the MVPS hosts file, Sygate Personal Firewall Pro, SpywareBlaster, and Mozilla 1.7.13. The latter is on the list because IE is so tied in with the OS that exploits and drive by downloads are more likely.
And in the extermely unlikely event anything gets past Sygate, Avast, or the hosts file, the last line of defense is SpybotSD.
But more important than any of that is a good measure of common sense. -- "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they are very sophisticated idiots." - Doctor Who (from Robot) We are the Hacker Collective: Resistance Is Futile - All Your AACS Keys Will Be Assimilated.

with the following i have not had any adware, let alone a virus in over 18 months
wrt54gl/ddwrt connected to 2 desktops and 2 laptops all running XP pro:
NOD32 2.70 (auto update every 6 hours) Ad aware SE (update and clean once a week) spybot S&D (update and clean once a week)
seriously the worst thing that happened in a while was starforce, and that was my fault...
