| reply to L337 Avast and BoClean run resident and I never have a problem as I use common sense in my surfing and don't use Active-X, always have the latest version of Java and keep Windows fully patched. Occasionally I'll run Spybot, AdAware and AVG AS scans but never find anything. As malware develops and mutates no one product will catch everything, but you can cut your risks to non existent without changing branded products. -- Team Discovery

Still use Spybot, Adaware, and AVG. Oh yeah, I've also got Win Defender on too. It's never found anything yet though. Not sure what it's doing - if anything. Oh again - behind a router too, XP default firewall - no bad things happening here either. -- I thought I made a mistake once but I was wrong |

| I just use Windows Live Onecare 1.6 for firewall, spyware, and virus checking and backup. I also have a good router the Dlink DIR-625 and of course just common sense. Once in a while I use clamshell and spybot to also check the system(because onecare isn't the best) but they have picked up nothing. |

| nothing is guaranteed but my system has no problems! and when I usually pick up a virant I can tell by a change in performance, every now an then I will try an online scan just to be safe but thats it, when I use to run a lot of spy/adware apps they tend to pick up on files that are not virants and can send your system out of wack, also I stay away from certain sites(with my important systems) |

I actually think that a lot of this is over-hyped. Someone said earlier that a router and some common sense will do wonders. I would agree with that. -- I thought I made a mistake once but I was wrong |

| reply to dadkins said by dadkins :*TO ME* cookies are irrelevant. They're harmless.
This isn't always the case. There exists a small number of malware/virus/worms type programs that will deposit a cookie onto a machine to see how often the cookies are cleared. If the cookie remains after a certain amount of time, then the next opportunity the malware/virus/worms type program to run on the machine, it will at least make the attempt to run and do it's dirty work. That said, cookies are sometimes helpful and deleting all your cookies all the time could leave you to always have to enter access codes to your favorite websites. Which is just darn inconvenient sometimes. So what to do? I myself use a batch file to save my useful cookies and delete all other cookies that I might not know what their functions are. Then restore the saved cookies. |

If the cookie remains after a certain amount of time, then the next opportunity the malware/virus/worms type program to run on the machine, it will at least make the attempt to run and do it's dirty work. That doesn't seem to make any sense. Why would a malware file care how often any cookies are deleted, or want to determine this information before executing? What difference would that make to the malware? That said, cookies are sometimes helpful and deleting all your cookies all the time could leave you to always have to enter access codes to your favorite websites. So what to do?
I myself use a batch file to save my useful cookies and delete all other cookies that I might not know what their functions are. Then restore the saved cookies. That seems like a lot of trouble. You may want to try Firefox. In my Firefox configuration, all cookies are outta here (disallowed to begin with) other than the ones I specifically allow. And I can save those or not from session to session, depending upon my preference. |
