None, none, and none. Safe browsing habits! Haven't steered me wrong yet...though I'm seriously asking for it, not even having SP2 installed. |

1 edit | reply to L337 WRT54GS - 3rd party firmware running IPTables with in & out rules. I'm fairly aggressive with outbound rules here, permitting POP/SMTP/FTP/etc to specific hosts only. About the only thing given full outbound access here is HTTP(S), which is controlled by the proxies below.
Proxomitron - all LAN clients must use this proxy (IPTables above will drop outbound otherwise). Basically use this instead of any type of ad blocker, js filter, etc.
Squid - Proxo forwards to Squid, which has additional ACLs. Actually very aggressive in dropping traffic to just about every TLD other than .com/.net/.org/.gov, with a few specific exceptions. I also have a black-list based on BleedingSnort lists, and a white-list-only ACL for the kids based on authentication (proxy requires authentication). This also gives me shared caching, log files, etc.
My PC (still run with admin) - XP SP2: Comodo firewall Avast Home (free) Acronis TrueImage
Wife's PC plus two kids' PCs (limited users) - XP SP2: Windows firewall Avast Home
My laptop - Linux (not root, of course ): IPtables firewall
Edit to add one very important app -- Acronis TrueImage! I have it set to do a monthly full, and weekly incrementals.

I once had a dream that Sean Connery stayed at my apt., and he had his laptop with Win98 on it, and he knew how to connect to my wireless network. I don't do drugs |

| reply to L337 nod32 loaded on-demand, ad-aware every few months. if you know what youre doing, you wont need to run many scans of anything, and you defly dont need a real-time scanner. good browsing habbits (read: firefox/opera over IE6) and knowing what you're DLing over BT or whichever p2p you use should be enough for most advanced computer users. of course it's a good idea to have an AV installed for on-demand scanning of shady files, and ad-aware and similiar apps will take care of most non-system critical spyware apps (tracking cookies, pop-ups, etc)
for the masses, though, you can never be too safe. the masses are asses, and as such will require a full-time real-time AV and spyware app. kaspersky and, to a lesser extent, norton are my 2 favorite full internet security suites, and spysweeper is the all-around best spyware program if you want that little extra protection than what Windows Defender offers (and willing to pay for it). otherwise Defender is a nice, free solution and does an adequate job.
also, spybot S&D has been known to destroy many a registry, resulting in more problems than it solves, so beware IMO. if you can get it to work without it trashing your windows install, than it's hard to beat, but otherwise... -- Somnambulator - t3h 5133pw41k3r The Common Grounds |

My ass is massive, too.
I've never heard of Spybot S&D 'destroying a Registry'. I've heard of AdAware trashing whole machines, though:
»CAUTION: AdAware 2007 Beta 1 WIPED MY HDD CLEAN!! »Problem with Ad-Aware
The naive user allowing Registry cleaners to delete files that are mis-identified as 'safe to delete' is how I have noticed 'many a Registry getting destroyed'. |

| reply to L337 Just My router.. I guess I must not surf much, or download from (bad) places, because ive never had any problems. I have used AV programs in the past, but after months of them just running and not doing anything, i start to wonder why i have it at all -- Trust is the condition necessary for betrayal |

| reply to L337 Three computers that are, from time to time, on two separate networks (MA & FL). Two laptops - the Acer has ZoneAlarm suite and the Dell has free ZoneAlarm and Norton AV. A third machine, a Dell desktop, has McAfee suite (only because I haven't gone to the effort to delete the sucker . I periodically (more or less on a monthly basis, though the business laptop is treated on a weekly basis) run Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE Personal, and RootKitRevealer. Both networks are behind Verizon supplied routers - one with FIOS TV and internet, the other DSL - all wireless connections are WPA PSK with a 9 character letter/number key. The DSL router supplied was only capable of WEP, so another was daisy-chained to get the WPA capability. I know, I know -- too much info |

| reply to parputt said by parputt :NOD32 Hosts File SpywareBlaster Spybot S&D That is all and it keeps me nice and toasty. Oh, and I still use IE I'm nice and toasty with a hosts file, Spybot S&D as an occasional check, XP Pro firewall, and a NAT router. I use a white list for all email, the rest goes to a junk mailbox. All my favorite websites go into the trusted zone, the rest get a locked down version of the Internet zone. I have not had a single problem in more than 5 years or longer! |
