I use avast Home but I don't run it at default - I turn it up!
Even when I scan with... everything else you can probably name(weird hobby), all that is ever found by any of them is... cookies.
*TO ME* cookies are irrelavent. They're harmless.
So, if you use a good AV but run it at higher than default, and keep it updated, *MOST* things will be caught *AS* they try to get in.
Some people feel that full-on Web scanning is a waste and that detection on access or when "something" runs is enough.
Bulls***!
Common logic dictates that - if ??? is not on the machine, there is no chance of it possibly being accessed or running.
Be wary of ANYONE that tells you otherwise!
"It's harmless if it doesn't run" KMA! 
*I* don't want 10? 20? 50? pieces of malware sitting in various locations on my HDDs waiting for the random click to activate "them".

This isn't always the case. There exists a small number of malware/virus/worms type programs that will deposit a cookie onto a machine to see how often the cookies are cleared. If the cookie remains after a certain amount of time, then the next opportunity the malware/virus/worms type program to run on the machine, it will at least make the attempt to run and do it's dirty work. That said, cookies are sometimes helpful and deleting all your cookies all the time could leave you to always have to enter access codes to your favorite websites. Which is just darn inconvenient sometimes. So what to do? I myself use a batch file to save my useful cookies and delete all other cookies that I might not know what their functions are. Then restore the saved cookies. | |

That doesn't seem to make any sense. Why would a malware file care how often any cookies are deleted, or want to determine this information before executing? What difference would that make to the malware?

I myself use a batch file to save my useful cookies and delete all other cookies that I might not know what their functions are. Then restore the saved cookies. That seems like a lot of trouble. You may want to try Firefox.
In my Firefox configuration, all cookies are outta here (disallowed to begin with) other than the ones I specifically allow. And I can save those or not from session to session, depending upon my preference. | |
