I'm behind a Linksys WRT54G, so I am provided inbound protection by NAT and the SPI firewall.

I subscribe to the Leo Laporte school of thought when it comes to software firewalls. I know that bothers some people, but it has worked well for me. I encourage everyone to find a solution that works best for them and stick to it. Just because this method works for me does not mean it is the end-all solution for everybody. In short, to each his own. :)

I use common sense when web browsing and make sure that all of my software is up-to-date with the latest security patches available.

However, when I set up a computer for a friend or family member, I do run additional software: Avast! Antivirus, Spybot S & D with immunization, SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender. I provided instructions on how to use this software before I consider the job "complete."

Must agree that I do not recall either...of ever seeing any anti malware program that offers a 100% guarantee.....an if one actually did I would I sure as heck would know its not telling the truth. Its just not possible for any anti malware program to give such a guarantee.
Without going into details of my set-up....I have found that using a virtual computer offers a layer of protection because upon re-booting the computer returns to its orginal clean state. But virtual computers are not for everyone...sure they are easy enough to use.....but I certainly do not run in virtual mode all the time....an yet, considering how corrupt the internet has become as well as how malware vendors tactics are forever changing....I would not seriously question if the time will come when we are forced to use virual computers.

I've been using aVast 4.7 lately and it seems pretty good until I finally got a Adware! I haven't got an Adware in such a long long time and now this happens. What kind of setup do you guys use? What would you guys recommend as a good setup?

Define "Adware"

I use avast Home but I don't run it at default - I turn it up!

Even when I scan with... everything else you can probably name(weird hobby), all that is ever found by any of them is... cookies.

*TO ME* cookies are irrelavent. They're harmless.

So, if you use a good AV but run it at higher than default, and keep it updated, *MOST* things will be caught *AS* they try to get in.

Some people feel that full-on Web scanning is a waste and that detection on access or when "something" runs is enough.

Bulls***!

Common logic dictates that - if ??? is not on the machine, there is no chance of it possibly being accessed or running.

Be wary of ANYONE that tells you otherwise!

*I* don't want 10? 20? 50? pieces of malware sitting in various locations on my HDDs waiting for the random click to activate "them".

I don't recall ever seeing an anti-malware software with the guarantee of 'you will never ever for the rest of your life have to concern with a piece of malware infecting your machine'.

Unfortunately, no program is 100 percent effective. Well... I use KAV, Sybot S&D, BOClean, and Windows Defender.

One I can reccomend is SuperAntispyware and I've been hearing good things about RogueRemover and Spyware Terminator..
