My speed went down from 1800/768 to 200/200 on peak times, but was pretty stable offpeak. This has been going on for a couple of weeks and i got really fed up with the indian accent of their tech suport (first you take away jobs from people who live where you are and buy your product, now you make me listen to their accents). Opps, got a little side-tracked. So, yeah, Brooklyn and the whole New York area is cursed. One of the techies in escalation team in verizon told me that there could be some packet loss in Boston or some stuff... But he seemed mostly clueless about the issue. Soooo, yeah, thats how i switched to cable, didn't expect the same problem here thou :) Oh well, at least its 1000-2000/500 during peak times, and not dial up speed :) Hope it gets resolved soon.
travisthecat : Well, guess what? The "trick" of spoofing my MAC address and getting a different IP no longer works. Oh, I get the different IP, but the speeds remain in the crappy 3200/800 range.

I spent another damned hour with tech support last night. Everything looked fine to him, of course. I explained the whole MAC spoofing thing, etc. Hell, I even quoted other frustrated users from this very thread. I knew he wouldn't be able to help me, but I at least wanted them to know that we are all waiting.

I haven't checked the MAC spoofing thing for about seven hours, so for all I know, I may be able to get good speeds if I MAC spoof right now. It's a quick fix (and needs to be applied every stinkin' time I turn on the computer) but at least it gave me the speeds I am paying for.

Has the MAC spoofing "solution" stopped working for others, as well? If so, it could actually be a good thing -- I've been reluctant to get a tech over to my house because I knew he would plug in his laptop and get good speeds (since his laptop would naturally have a different MAC addy) and he would of course tell me the problem is with my computer.

BUT...if he got crap speeds, as well, perhaps some action would be taken.

So, what now? At $60 per month (I'm on Boost), my patience is starting to get severely limited. The speeds I'm currently getting are barely better than DSL, but at exactly half the price. Do I have to go back to Verizon? Do we have any other high-speed options for this part of Brooklyn? FIOS is a long ways off, as far as I can tell.

For the record, I'm on 16th AVE. My street is in the late sixties. I connect my Motorola SB5100 direct to my power mac (so no router issues).

Are we all using the same modem? Perhaps an upgrade to the latest Motorola can help us?

I'm at a loss. If anyone has any other ideas, please let us know. In the meanwhile, KEEP CALLING THEM!
anon : 11223, the same thing. Around 2-3 weeks ago I've noticed a slowdown. I could no longer exceed 460KB/sec up and around 107KB/sec down. This after 1.5+ years with OOL and (with 1-2 exceptions) never a problem always having max 15/2 (mbit) speeds.

Since noticing the problem I've waited 1.5 weeks to see if it resolves itself. Then I called tech support. Went through the usuall troubleshooting (restart modem, reset modem from their end, signal test). I have even connected the modem directly to a PC (upon tech request) and still the same speed. I asked if there were any caps on my account and tech said she doesn't see anything. (I have been upload capped before, but never download capped so this issue looked strange.) Final suggestion was to replace the modem.

I was about to do that (not that it would help but at least on the next call I can say: I replaced the modem already and still the same), but as a final test I tried connecting my modem back to my usual setup (firewall/router). Restarted modem, router, computer and got full 15/2 mbits again. I also noticed my IP has changed, and I had the same IP since day one (as far as I remember).

My phone call was on last tuesday. Yesterday was fine. But did upload ~600 MB yesterday, so I'm wondering if that is not the cause of this problem - uploading too much.

OOL is know (or was) for upload capping.
anon : StreetSpirit: When I first got OOL my voip service was terrible (internet and phone). It would go out constantly, sometimes for hours on end. This went on for a month (bad days with good days). A tech came, checked everything and said he couldn't find anything wrong (of course, the voip service was working fine when he was there). After that, it started again and I called and complained to a rep on one of the good days, she asked me to call when the service was acting up. So I did....the rep could barely hear me and I could barely make out what the rep was saying to me. After that, they fixed the problem (replaced some cabling outside) and my upload speeds doubled to 2mb and the problem was solved. Now, with this speed reduction, my uploads are 1mb again.

At this point, I'm going to continue calling and nagging about this issue, because it is an issue.
nosebleed : 11204 here. Bensonhurst --- near 18th avenue and 60s.

I am pretty sure I've had this issue for about a week or so now. I didn't think much of the speeds at first, but last night I was running a torrent AND youtube. The youtube video kept stopping every 5 seconds (literally) and I noticed that I was only downloading @ 320 kb/s and uploading at like 20... so that was certainly not the problem. Also remembered this happening a few days ago but it didn't really register in my head to check connection... so anyway, then ran a speedtest and got the ugly news of a 2-4 down/1 up connection.
