| Default gateway changed
I lost my Internet connection yesterday, May 30, at around 8am EDT, according to my syslog. When I got home and checked everything, I found no errors, i.e. modem was synched and PPPoE logged on. However, I could not ping even the default route IP directly from my Cisco router. So I called TekSavvy and asked if any changes were made. The answer was no. So I got more specific and asked if they changed the default gateway (I have a static IP, so default gateway is hard coded together with IP). The person on the phone appeared to not understand the question and suggested to eliminate the router and dial PPPoE directly from a Windows XP computer. At that point I thanked him and decided to continue the troubleshooting myself. After awhile I proved that my suspicions were correct - the default gateway changed from 65.39.134.4 (piero.pppoe.ca) to 206.248.154.123 . After making a correction to the router's config, I was back online.
It would have definitely helped if people answering the phone knew of this change...
Thank you! |

| Hi HidingOne,
There were changes made to take load off of our primary router while we wait for another router to come in. When it does come in both routers will run in parallel and you will be assigned a random router (decided by round-robin) and as such your default gateway will always change.
You should not have to hard code the gateway in your equipment. If you leave it unassigned it should all get pushed down from our side.
This is why nobody on our side knew about it because its not at all a common issue. Also was the fact that only a small portion of our customers was affected by the change. You happen to be one of them.
Let us know if you need help tweaking your system so that its not hard coded. -- TSI Marc - TekSavvy Solutions Inc. |

| reply to HidingOne Looks like you are on our Cisco now. We switched some customers from one router to another in order to balance the load and you where affected by it. Customers using Cisco routers as PPPoE clients use a statically configured default gateway and in reality it shouldn't. |

@pirelli.com | reply to TSI Marc Hi Marc, As I said, I got everything running last night. But it would have been much easier if somebody told me that yes, there were changes made |
