Digital pack rat here as well. In over 4+ years of having a
Usenet account with Giganews, I've amassed 235GB of music and
478 GB of movies, TV shows and anime.

Along the way I've gone through 6 hard drives, which either
got too full or more frequently died on me, forcing me to
restore everything from backup DVDRs.

Pretty much since day 1 I backed up everything I downloaded
onto CDR, then DVDR. I currently am up to 185 DVD's worth.

I've listened to about 40-50% of the music, and watched
maybe 20-30% of the video (though the actual amount seen
is larger since much of what I downloaded I had previously
recorded on VHS during the 90s.)

I have 2-250 and 1-500 hard drives. I will increase as needed. I`m hoping to keep everything on these without the hassle of backup. Did your bad drives give you any warning before they failed? Was there no chance of recovering your lost data?
