| [Vista] Can Vista Home Premium join a domain? I'm planning an upgrade and am not sure whether I want Home Premium or Ultimate.
I do 'one day' plan to put all my home machines into a domain, so I want to know whether Home Premium machines can join a domain. The MS 'compare the editions' web page doesn't really spell out details like that. |

Why don't you go ahead and get Vista Home Premium now, and one day, when you need to join a domain, use the Windows Anytime Upgrade to jump to Vista Business.
You can upgrade that way without having to reinstall Vista. -- »myhax0r.net

Vista Home Premium supports Directory, File, and Printer sharing between individual PCs on a Home LAN, just by setting all of the PCs to be in the same Workgroup name...

| An actual domain.
The DC is a cutting-edge 266MHz Pentium II with 128MB RAM, down in the basement. Though it may get upgraded soon, since there's a 550MHz Pentium III becoming free just as soon as it gets replaced with a new Vista desktop.
(The point of the domain being 'a single set of accounts' betweem the 6 systems in the house). |

 | reply to dave seems like you need vista business or higher, microsoft did the same thing with xp home, if you want to join a domain you will have to spend more $
it sucks but thats what it is...
I have heard of ways to allow xp home to join a domain, dont know if vista home premium has a fix yet or if its even worth it, when I ran in to this problem with a laptop I just bit the bullet and brought xp pro.
ps.
dont know about vista but with xp home you are allowed to browse/download(and a few other things) files and folders, just could not join/experience all of the benefits of joining(share security permissions etc. ) a domain |

Home Basic > Premium Basic > Ultimate Premium > Ultimate Business > Ultimate
I don't think you can do the 'anytime' upgrade from Home to Business though. But I could be wrong.

I see no merit in buying the wrong version today and then upgrading it later.
I ordered a copy of 'ultimate'. |

That's cool, I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth, it just sounded like from your OP that you wouldn't need to join a domain now, and if that's the case then you could get Premium now and upgrade to Ultimate later.
The price difference would be the same, it would just be delayed.
And from what I hear (I haven't personally done it), the upgrade is "easy", doesn't require redoing your machine, it just unlocks the "ultimate" features.
I'm sure you'll be happy with your Ultimate purchase anyway, it has a few "extra" things that should be cool as well. -- »myhax0r.net

davePremium,MVM join:2000-05-04 not in ohio kudos:7 | No offence taken nor intended. The 'domain' part is 'when I get around to setting it up', so it doesn't make sense to give myself any more excuses for laziness. |
