[DW6000] name for my IP number?

Is there a way to assign a name to my static IP number? I assume it's something that goes in a DNS server somewhere. Do I have to buy a domain name, or can it be me.hughesnet.com or whatever? Thanks, again.

out there

No, you can't assign a name to your static IP address. If you enter it here if will probably show up as part of an IP block that Hughes owns.

And, further, you are aware of the terms of service which states that your HughesNet connection is not to be used to run a server of any kind, correct?

Nothing screams "I'm running a server" more loudly than a DNS entry for your IP address.

Just buy a domain name »www.godaddy.com

Then use »www.dnsmadeeasy.com
to redirect to your router

Seagreen appears to be thinking my original though: PTR. However, if you're trying to get an address like... www.mydomain.com to point to your IP, you can easily do it. This is an alias. You can use a dynamic DNS service (dyndns.org) or buy your own domain and use a service like ZoneEdit.

Alias (A) is Name -> IP
Pointer (PTR) is IP -> Name

Alias is doable, PTR is not.
