[XP Home] Problems with XP Updates - No Response

I have tried several times to check for updates on XP software - the system just hangs and never sends back a response. It just shows that it is checking the system (green bar going across). Tried another computer in my house and it worked right away. Any recommendations?

Windows Update is an Internet Explorer, link for here:

If you have Firefox (as I suggest), or any other browser than Internet Explorer as your default, copy and paste

www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/

into MS IE's location bar

How long did you wait? On my XP home system, Windows Updates take 13 and half minutes to run the Custom updates.
Somewhere in the past couple of years Windows Updates really slowed down. In the good old days it used to take around a minute to run an update.

On the laptop 5-10 minutes, then I gave up. On my considerably slower desktop maybe 1 minute.

I would try again and give it more time.
