said by dslwanter :Well then AT&T could also take a stand and say piss on the ads or we're going elsewhere. You don't think AT&T is getting some revenue from those ads? AT&T is the instigator of the ads, not Yahoo!. In fact, Yahoo! | reply to wings10 said by wings10 :You don't think yahoo gets more money from AT&T depending on how many subscribers there are? Also If Yahoo charges clients to advertise would they not be able to charge them even more to place an ad if they have even more subscribers? Yahoo is partnered with AT&T on providing DSL Service. It is called AT&T/Yahoo DSL. So don't fool yourself. Yahoo is making money on this. Both from advertisers and from AT&T. AT&T is contracting with Yahoo! to provide the Yahoo! services. Of course Yahoo! is making money off of the contract. Coca Cola® makes money off of every cup of Coke® sold by McDonalds. So what?
The point is, Yahoo! has no say in how the AT&T DSL infrastructure is managed. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| reply to charpaula said by charpaula :My email to abuse@sbcglobal.net received the following response Thank you for contacting AT&T Internet Abuse. We apologize for the inconvenience. The advertising is a needed step towards providing world class service at an affordable price. This cracks me up. I have yet to receive 'world class service' from anyone claiming world class service. Heck, some internal groups at work claim 'world class service' and they dont.
The only time I have received 'world class service' is from a place/buisness that did not claim such standards. |

| reply to Mchart ISP email so 1999? Maybe if the email being provided was a 1999 version. The webbased email is feature rich and available wherever I go without my having to lug my laptop around
I would not use the basic Yahoo or MSN emails due to their ads. Gmail also has ads, but they are texted based without flashing geeky lights and what not that give me a migraine
DSL service comes with Premium Yahoo email - a non-advertising stand alone package available from Yahoo for $19.95. The Premium package included with my DSL service
Instead AT&T has changed my Premium Yahoo email - without changing my TOS or features - to an adbased piece of garbage
As a result - I've installed the AdBlockPlus Firefox plugin I would have preferred not to as I believe free websites have a right to monetize... Notice I said FREE websites
Can't wait for the next installment of the continuing saga of AT&T Yahoo DSL... For all of you using Outlook or some other email client to access your AT&T Yahoo mail----can advertising appended to all incoming and outgoing mail be far behind??? |

That would violate RFC 2821... I think that might also cause issues with "Signed" email. PGP or otherwise. Signing verifies the integrity of the message in addition to certifying the signer is valid. If ATT "adds" stuff to an email message itself it would show as being "tampered with". |

Back in '99 DSL was $50/month and the speeds were 768/128. The speeds keep going up on the price keeps going down. If they need to use ads to subsidize their service so be it. -- »tehblogs.com |

3 edits | reply to Old_Grouch Yep, they just showed up for me this morning. I use Firefox/Adblock Plus to block them, but the blank space where they were still takes up a large chunk of screen real estate. I'm also seeing links now for yahoo shopping, yahoo autos, etc. on the left pane where the folders are. Absolute BS!
Between this crap and the announcement that AT&T intends to start spying on their customers for the RIAA/MPAA, I'm starting to consider other options for Internet access. It's really too bad to, since I've had next to no problems with my DSL service. |

It's really too bad to, since I've had next to no problems with my DSL service. I feel you bro! As if my sync loss with strong thunderstorms wasn't enough now ads in email. Give me a break. This is to be expected with free services such as hotmail but not with PAID internet service. I don't care if it's $14.99 a month or $59.99 a month, if I'm paying, the hell with the ads, they are annoying. I'd rather my DSL bill go up $10 a month than put up with ads. If I ever get another option out this way, I may consider switching. As of right now there's only 2 things I like about AT&T, 1) AT&T Direct and 2) PPPoE stability. -- "You're as worthless as a screen door on a submarine!" | When I first got DSL (at $49.99 per month), the disk allowance for email was small (5 or 10 Meg, as I recall), and there was no webmail and no spam filtering.
You can avoid the ads by using a POP3 client and avoiding the webmail interface. You still pay less, and you still have a lot more disk space for email.
I really see this thread as much ado about nothing. When SBC originally made a deal with Yahoo, it was obvious that part of the deal was that Yahoo would get to use our eyeballs for its own profits. All that is happening now is that they are changing the way they are using our eyeballs.
I do hope that Yahoo is getting paid by the click. Since I won't ever click on these ads, they won't generate any income from me. -- AT&T dsl; Westell 2200 modem/router; SuSE 10.1; firefox 2.0.0.4 |
