I agree. And never changing your e-mail address again is a big plus. I don't bother with web host, however. I turned it over to a mail handling service -- and I am happy to pay them my whopping $20 a year for nearly spam-free e-mail via Web, WAP, IMAP, POP/SMTP, and more addresses than I can think of. Fastmail, RunBox, Tuffmail were the ones I looked at. The web site Email Discussions covers it.

So, when the nightly cron job runs, it learns from what doesn't get caught initially. Once it gets trained though, its nice!

I created my free Yahoo! Mail account in 1999. Except for a period between Dec. 18, 2002 and some time in 2004, when it was merged with an '@pacbell.net' account, it has always had ads.

I keep forgetting: Even though the account has been severed from the '@pacbell.net' account, it still shows the AT&T co-branding. So I will add a new screen shot from a pure free webmail account.

That is how that arrow was designed to work. Other people reported seeing ads before I saw any.

I saw ads in the Primary account before I saw them in the sub accounts; at one point, I had ads in some accounts, but not in others.

About half the time I see evidence of blocked ads. I have a few custom blocks in my 'hosts' file, but I haven't updated the ad sites in over a year. I run the latest versions of the browsers: Opera 9.21 has some native blocking built in. Firefox 2.0.0.4 has script and ad blocking extensions, as does SeaMonkey 1.1.2. I haven't accessed the web mail site with MS Internet Explorer 7 yet.

Not in the preferences on the web site. But, if you are running ad blockers in conjunction with your browser, and even MSIE7 now has some ad blocker capability, you won't see many, or even any ads.

You can avoid the ads by using a POP3 client and avoiding the webmail interface. You still pay less, and you still have a lot more disk space for email.

I really see this thread as much ado about nothing. When SBC originally made a deal with Yahoo, it was obvious that part of the deal was that Yahoo would get to use our eyeballs for its own profits. All that is happening now is that they are changing the way they are using our eyeballs.

I do hope that Yahoo is getting paid by the click. Since I won't ever click on these ads, they won't generate any income from me.

I feel you bro! As if my sync loss with strong thunderstorms wasn't enough now ads in email. Give me a break. This is to be expected with free services such as hotmail but not with PAID internet service. If I ever get another option out this way, I may consider switching. As of right now there's only 2 things I like about AT&T, 1) AT&T Direct and 2) PPPoE stability.

Back in '99 DSL was $50/month and the speeds were 768/128. The speeds keep going up on the price keeps going down. If they need to use ads to subsidize their service so be it.

That would violate RFC 2821...

I think that might also cause issues with "Signed" email. PGP or otherwise. Signing verifies the integrity of the message in addition to certifying the signer is valid. I would not use the basic Yahoo or MSN emails due to their ads. Gmail also has ads, but they are texted based without flashing geeky lights and what not that give me a migraine

DSL service comes with Premium Yahoo email - a non-advertising stand alone package available from Yahoo for $19.95. The Premium package included with my DSL service

Instead AT&T has changed my Premium Yahoo email - without changing my TOS or features - to an adbased piece of garbage

As a result - I've installed the AdBlockPlus Firefox plugin I would have preferred not to as I believe free websites have a right to monetize... Notice I said FREE websites

When I use the webmail I don't have to physically download whatever e-mail's to my own computer. The webmail system blocks all images for me. The webmail system doesn't have any extra bloat that even outlook express has. Etc..

I haven't tried the yahoo mail beta, but the current version I'm just fine with. (Besides bullshit ads now). I'm the kind of person that keeps their computer ultra-clean, so if I can go by without installing outlook or thunderbird, I will do just that.

As for using gmail or any other number of online services. Why? I don't want gmail. I want the system that I allready have that works just fine.

Spam? The spamguard (at least for me) works excellent. It rarely catches something it shouldn't, and only once in a great while will I get the penile enlargement mail in my inbox. And that fake-address type system with the yahoo mail is wonderful. I can create a new address to use on various sign-up forms on sites, so my real one doesn't get spammed.

I love the system, but this ad nonsense is unreal.
