·Verizon FiOS

Let carriers be carriers....

To me an ideal situation would have carriers handle the data connectivity layer and service providers offer services that can make use of that data connection. There's no reason a carrier can't also be a service provider either.

I would love to be able to pay Verizon for instance a montly fee to give me FiOS and mobile broadband access but nothing more. All I want is an IP address (DHCP, you get the picture) and bandwidth. Then on top of that I can go to whatever service provider I want for content, VoIP, TV, etc... But as above it may be that it's in my best intrest to pay for Verizon as a service provider for my home VoIP. The thing is that choice should be up to me.
