That's correct. AAW 2007 is compatible with Windows 2000 (Pro and Server), Windows Server 2003, Windows XP (Home and Pro).

Personally, I would advise waiting until Certified for Windows Vista:

quote:
Certified for Windows Vista software:

* Is independently tested for compatibility, functionality and reliability on Windows Vista-based PC's.
* Provides enhanced security by implementing Microsoft security guidelines.
* Meets privacy standards set forth by the Anti-Spyware Coalition.
* Installs reliably and if necessary, uninstalls cleanly.
* Eliminates unnecessary reboots.
* Ensures compatibility with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows Vista.
You can follow Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 933305: Applications that have earned the "Certified for Windows Vista" logo or the "Works with Windows Vista" logo. Look under "More Information".

I can't help but wonder why these 5, and only these 5, entries from my hosts file would be considered critical items.

I just installed the free version which automatically uninstalled the old one. It appears there is now a new automatic service running all the time:

AAWSERVICE.EXE

This service is taking up almost 40 MB of system ram even though the free version is just an "on demand" scanner. I looked for an option to disable it but do not see one.

I disabled the ad-aware service and then the program would not run. I decided to uninstall the entire program and wait until a newer version comes out that does not force me run a service all of the time.

Thanks for the warning about that service running in the background, now i'm probably not going to install it. Thats sucks though that you can't disable it, since like you said its just an on demand scanner.

You guys have got to be kidding me.... you didn't think of setting the service to "manual" so that it only enables itself when you use the program, then just stop the service after a manual scan via the task manager.

No I agree with the posters above - AAW is, for lack of better expression, a KRAFT-cheese-singles program - sufficient, but not anything amazing in its class. Thus to have a service running @ 40Mb, or having to manually start/stop it, makes this new AAW not worth the hassle IMO at this point in time.

That's what you aren't understanding.... it doesn't run unless you actually open and use the program. How often do you actually run manual scans with it? How hard is it to stop the service after the scan?....... it's FREE, don't complain.

If you don't want the Ad-Aware service running all the time. Go to Start, then Run. Type services.msc into the Run box. When in Services, stop the Ad-Aware 2007 service and change the start up type from Automatic to Manual. Then create a batch file by copying the following into notepad and saving as Ad-Aware 2007.bat

net start aawservice
"C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\Ad-Aware2007.exe"
net stop aawservice

To prevent the command window appearing every time you open Ad-Aware, create a shortcut to the .bat file and in Properties set the shortcut to run Minimized.

To apply the Ad-Aware icon to the shortcut, just right click the shortcut, go to Properties, Change Icon, and browse to the Ad-Aware exe file in the Lavasoft folder.

It seems you could just go to Start, Run and type "net stop aawservice".

The command will still be on the Run drop down list the next time you need it.

why not just put a shortcut to "services" on your desktop so you can go direct ???

do a search on services ( it's in "administrative tools" ) - you'll get the little double-gear icon - then right click on it and send to desktop as a shortcut.

You can then click on it anytime you need to change any XP service.

Thanks for letting us know about the running service in the background. I will not install it now, simple as that.

Trick to get to the Host File Editor in the free version.

Certainly savvy users can start/stop the service assuming they know about it. But the vast majority of users will install this program and not even notice that the service continues to run after exiting the program.

What is not clear is why this service defaults to running all the time with automatic startup. Does it actually provide some real-time protection in the free version? Or is it there just to make migration to the pay version easier?

This new version also installs additional tools which are not supposed to work in the free version. Here's a trick (bug)I just found:

Turn off the AAWSERVICE.EXE if it is running. Navigate to

C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\

Double click on HostFileEditor.exe

You will see the above warning that you need to upgrade to use this tool. Do not click "OK." Instead exit the window by clicking the red "x" in the upper right corner. Now you are in the Host File Editor which is supposed to work only in the pay versions.

Fun.

This service running after a scan is not a new phenomena in AAW. It is also present in the current version AdAware SE Personnal. Run a scan and check your Task Manager it's always there.

Also info on the hosts file error is here »www.hostsfile.info/Ad-Aware.html

Viruses, spyware, keyloggers, etc. are also free.
Should we just shut up and not complain about having those on our systems, also?

For those using Vista, Lavasoft has some assurances for you:

". . we’ve just recently discovered a technical glitch required for Ad-Aware 2007 to fully operate with Vista. . .

We know that Vista compatibility is an important issue for many of our customers, and rest assured that it is at the forefront of our development efforts with the Ad-Aware 2007 product.

I know some folks like the program's tools beyond just the scanner.
Whether or not this continues to be a reputable company which distributes reliable products is, I suppose, up to the individual to decide.
