1 edit | Trick to get to the Host File Editor in the free version. Certainly savvy users can start/stop the service assuming they know about it. But the vast majority of users will install this program and not even notice that the service continues to run after exiting the program.
What is not clear is why this service defaults to running all the time with automatic startup. Does it actually provide some real-time protection in the free version? Or is it there just to make migration to the pay version easier?
This new version also installs additional tools which are not supposed to work in the free version. Here's a trick (bug)I just found:
Turn off the AAWSERVICE.EXE if it is running. Navigate to
C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\
Double click on HostFileEditor.exe
You will see the above warning that you need to upgrade to use this tool. Do not click "OK." Instead exit the window by clicking the red "x" in the upper right corner. Now you are in the Host File Editor which is supposed to work only in the pay versions.
