Living in Kentucky on a Farm

My family lives on a farm in Western Kentucky. We are 44000 feet from a telephone CO. Cable service is 21 miles away. So no DSL or cable internet service is available or planned. We get TV service from DirecTV. Tried Satellite internet from Hughes, service was so bad my family cancelled it. Over the telephone line on a good day we can connect via a USR modem. So I would like to know how internet service will be provided to all by the end of 2007? I live in Virginia and I can choose from DSL, FIOS or Cable, I use cable because of the savings of TV/internet/telephone at a great price.

Love,

I am not sure about Western Kentucky, but in Ohio, I can get Sprint EVDO. While I have a main broadband carrier, I use sprint EVDO whenever I am on the road. As long as there is a cell tower for sprint, you can use the internet. Speeds are anywhere from 1 mbit (125KB/S) dn to 128 (16KB/S) up in revision 0 to 3mbit dn (375KB/S) and 768 up (96KB/S). Therefore, instead of pissing away money on satellite, why not have your family invest in this service? Cost is 50-60 dollars a month for unlimited usage. While pings are relatively high (200-300ms) they are much better than satellite usually offers. Also, you are not stuck to some ridiculous usage cap. Just a thought bud.

Based on your post it sounds like your family lives in a rural area. Is it fair to challenge Kentucky's success by claiming that a KY rural area is underserved and you, in metro DC, are overserved?
