What about Rural areas?

I'd say Illinois is one of the few states where I have heard NOTHING of FIOS deployment. It may be time to call 140 West St. and find out a good explanation of what the heck is going on. I'm wondering if we aren't going to be a sell off in the Verizon territory in far southern Illinois. In that case, we should build our own municipal fiber optic network and be done with it.

First rule of fiber optics: you do not talk about fiber optics!

Re: What about Rural areas?

Wisconsin is looking the same way.. most of Verizons Wisconsin operations are surrounded by AT&T or small telephone companies.

Include Idaho. Surrounded by Qwest and independent telcos.

Re: What about Rural areas?

South East corner of Wisconsin representing here. I am too far from the DSLAM for DSL (by about .5 miles), and that was through AT&T. There is a local phone node (Less than 2 blocks away!!), but AT&T says it will not support a DSLAM.

My only real choice for HSI is Roadrunner cable.

I have talked to the locals here about their land line phone service, and they all say it sucks, and we are in a new construction complex!!

That is because there are no more planned FIOS rollouts in the Midwest.... the only FIOS that will be deployed is in the FT Wayne, IN area. Verizon wants to sell off WI, IL, IN, OH, and MI so it has been investing as little money as possible into maintaining its current Network in those states. The only reason that OH is seeing some capital expenditure in VZ territory is that the PUCO mandated 1 million $ be spent{in addition to a $250K fine} due to a rise in customer complaints.

The Union haters on this forum just see this as an attempt to get more money for the Union which is not the case. This is about a corporation's responsibilty to its paying customers. Do you think the Field Techs like going to the same house/business 15 times a year for static/NDT and then have to explain why they have trouble every time it rains? Don't you think those same techs get frustrated when they report bad sections of cable, peds that need to be rehabbed, and other serious OSP issues and are told to put a band-aid on it repeatedly because there is "no money in the budget" for the necessary permanent repairs? How do think the CSRs who have to take calls from customers feel about having to tell customers with NDT that their service will be restored in 5 days, or that the static will be cleared in 7-10 days? FIOS may be the future, but it does not mean that the EXECUTIVES can treat its Copper Customers like sh!t.

Re: What about Rural areas?

Well crap, we may as well build a muni fiber optic network in our small town then. I'll still call Verizon and find out what is going on, but I'm not holding my breath.

I live in Northern Illinois which has a large Verizon service
area and I cannot get DSL. I suspect we (Ill Verizon customers) will see a sell off of Verizon lines. I have not heard of one
FIOS deployment in Illinois

In Arkansas, we have no steenkin verizon, so there is pretty much zero reason for us to cry about no fiber......

we're still trying to get ANY kind of highspeed where I am.... I guess the 48k dialup connection I get is considered highspeed out here....
