Re: Lightning

AT&T also uses the Netopia 2241N. Does it have problems losing sync during thunderstorms? I will also do some checking on Ebay.

Thanks.

I had a 6100 that did the same thing, I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on. I now have a versalink and so far it's been pretty good. Had a bad storm this morning, but i wasn't home to see if it affected it or not.

I must be lucky because AT&T replaced my old modem with a Westell 6100 earlier this year and have been through several thunderstorms since (including two today) and it never lost sync during any of them.

I have a Netopia 2241N on the way. I got lucky and found a complete Bellsouth package on Ebay this afternoon for $15 plus $13 Shipping. It includes all the cables, DSL filters and install disc. Hopefully this will solve my sync trouble during storms.

BTW..I'm curious does anyone know what Bellsouth (AT&T) charges for the Netopia 2241N? I assume it would be about $79 like the Westell 6100

Here is a link to the auction:

My elderly mother called me this morning to say she could not get on the internet from her computer. I had her look at her Westell 6100 and she said the power LED was flashing red and that all of the other LEDs were illuminated. Apparently they had had an extended power outage overnight due to thunderstorms. Though both her PC and modem (and homerun line) are surge and UPS protected, apparently it wasn't enough.

I 3-way called with her to the help desk and after repeating the same pull-the-power-cord test that I had led her through, the rep said it was toast and arranged shipment for a replacement.

That is what I have been trying to say. Nobody listens.

One can place all the surge protectors they want but without proper grounding and bonding for both the services entering the building and for the surge protectors as well it is money tossed into the wind.

I too lose sync during stormy events, which is quite frequently lately.....
I'm curious whether the Netopia 2241N would help...I have a westell 6100......

I should have a Netopia 2241N by the first of next week. I will post back and let you know how it works. I will have to wait till we have more storms in the area to see how it works. Lately we have been having storms everyday for several hours and it has been a royal pain losing the connection.

My mother called and says the replacement modem she received is the Netopia 2214n instead of another Westell 6100. I am a bit miffed because I can't lead her though the configuration by phone because I've never seen this thing. I checked the FAQ and it is a big vague in that it seems to point a lot at the Westell FAQ. I guess I'm going to have to get in the car on Saturday and go see mom. That's a good deal, but I would rather have her online Friday rather than waiting another day for me.

I just got off the phone with AT&T. They are going to send me a new Netopia 2241 DSL modem via UPS Next Business Day. The modem is regularly $79.00, but they are going to send it to me for $40.00 plus FREE shipping, since I'm a long time BellSouth/AT&T customer. The person I was talking to was from India, so he/she was a little hard to understand. I told them on the phone about having the problem with my DSL losing sync when a lighten storm was in the area. I also told them that I read it here on Broadbandreports.com that several people seem to be having the same trouble with the Westell 6100 modem losing sync during a thunderstorm. They tried to convince me that it was not the Westell 6100, but other issues, something about outside wiring. I told them to send me another modem anyway. As soon as I get the modem, I will let everyone here know how it works out. If I continue to have trouble with losing sync, then I'm only be out of $40.00! I had this old Westell 6100 three or four year now. Maybe it was time for a new modem anyway. I'll keep you posted!

If she has a 56k modem in her computer she can get online through dialup until you get over there. It comes in handy when something like this happens to check email or whatever, but then again it's only a day.

If the modem does not correct this problem of losing sync then AT&T is going to hear from me. I estimate I have had about 12 hours of down time this week because of the problem. In one one-hour span my modem lost sync over 30 times and there was a 40 minute span where it could not sync at all. If the modem does not solve the problem hopefully they can send out a tech who can figure out what is causing it.

Good Luck!
Bill

You are correct. And while her computer is equipped with a 56k dialup modem, what you may not know is that my mother, in her 80s, is feeble and does not see as weell as she formerly did. She can't get down to check or move phone cables. She's not at all technical. I had the DSL modem and router set at a height that she could easily reach to swap in a new modem with my guidance by phone. If only they had shipped the same model they had originally provided, something they are clearly able to do since they stll ship the Westell, she would be online right now.

I am confident the differences between the setup of the Westell and Netopia are minor. But minor is a big deal when she can't tell me adequately what she is seeing, and I have no good reference. I am happy to drive the 50 miles door to door to supportr mom. But I can't do it in the middle of the work week. A simple over-the-phone task turned into a must wait until the weekend task.

I installed the new Netopia modem today and it is very easy. If you are using the ethernet connection there is no software installation at all. You simply swap out the old modem reconnecting the new modem in the same fashion and swapping out the AC adapter. The Netopia uses a 12 volt power supply. Once connected you boot the computer and the Netopia will automatically pop up a registration screen where you enter your Bellsouth email address, user name, phone number, and password. That's It! There is another screen that popped up asking how often I wanted the modem to search for software updates. It also asked for a day and time to do this update. Once I set this the modem automatically updated itself and then reconnected.

We've not had any storms in the area today for me to judge how it will do during those conditions. I will post back when I know.

Good Luck.

Bill

Please do, I'll be interesting to know if your modem stands up to the lighten storms. My Netopia modem is coming hopefully by UPS in a couple of days.

I have been using the Netopia 2241 for some time and do not have any problems during rain, thunder or lighting loosing sync. The only thing that I dislike about mine, MTU is set at 1448 and I have not found a way to change it. Also I get a false reading on my downstream SN reading, anywhere from 1.5 up to 20+ but at 1.5 I never loose sync

Would be interesting to find out if anyone else has these problems

I do not see a setting for MTU in the settings of the modem. Dr. TCP shows my MTU at 1492 and so far my SN readings have been around 17.5. I will keep an eye on it and see if I notice it dropping.

Where are you seeing the MTU at 1448?
