ncguy68 : I installed the new Netopia modem today and it is very easy. If you are using the ethernet connection there is no software installation at all. You simply swap out the old modem reconnecting the new modem in the same fashion and swapping out the AC adapter. The Netopia uses a 12 volt power supply. Once connected you boot the computer and the Netopia will automatically pop up a registration screen where you enter your Bellsouth email address, user name, phone number, and password. That's It! There is another screen that popped up asking how often I wanted the modem to search for software updates. It also asked for a day and time to do this update. Once I set this the modem automatically updated itself and then reconnected.

We've not had any storms in the area today for me to judge how it will do during those conditions. The person I was talking to was from India, so he/she was a little hard to understand. I told them on the phone about having the problem with my DSL losing sync when a lighten storm was in the area. I also told them that I read it here on Broadbandreports.com that several people seem to be having the same trouble with the Westell 6100 modem losing sync during a thunderstorm. They tried to convince me that it was not the Westell 6100, but other issues, something about outside wiring. I told them to send me another modem anyway. As soon as I get the modem, I will let everyone here know how it works out. If I continue to have trouble with losing sync, then I'm only be out of $40.00! I had this old Westell 6100 three or four year now. Maybe it was time for a new modem anyway.
gordon1fan : Me and a friend of mine who lives two houses down from me is having the exact same problems as you are. When lightening is in the area, we would lose our dsl connections. Later when the storms have past, everything is working fine again. When I called BellSouth techs out to my house, he could not find any problems, of course when he came out it was not lightening either. He said what was causing the problem is that we was at the very end as far as distance wise from the CO. He told me to drop my speed down to 1.5 from 3.0 (we can't get 6.0) and that should solve the problem, which it did not. I had the same problem with 1.5 as I did with 3.0. We have had this problem now going on three years now. Is there any BellSouth Techs reading this forum? If there is, please try to explain the problems that we are having. Thank you!

P. Really like keeping an eye on the storm via radar on the internet so great time for wireless laptop on batteries. Worst case I'm out of dsl modem and wireless router. I'm betting and it's only a gut feel I could get the dsl modem replaced by AT+T for free; could be dead wrong about that. Any case a couple of hundred sure beat out several thousands. I've heard various stories how home owners insurances handles those cases. Have to admit using that setup my connection was solid as a rock -- never flinched.
