| from midnight to 8am you might get 2000 kbps (but I doubt it....)
Normal daytime evening use will be throttled to 400 -600
You should have read the other posts on this forum about Virgin media throttling speeds before you signed up...

@co.uk | reply to mrcrash They are actively traffic shaping people who DL more than 3gig in what they call peak times, which off the top of my head was 4pm to midnight, they will then reduce your bandwidth if you go over the imposed fair use limit. |

| It seems many VM customers are unhappy with the up and down nature of the XL package. You need to remember the limiting factor now with such a big bandwidth is actually the server you are trying to DL will not release enough of its own bandwidth to give you full connection speed.
If you want to test what maximum speeds you can get try just DLing any large 100mb+ file from
gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk gamefiles.virginmedia.com
Broadband Size: M - 2mb During peak times, the top 5% on the Size: M package download at least 350MB of traffic each.
Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till midnight) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed their download speed will be set to 1Mb, with their upload speed set to 128Kb. This will last for 4 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.
Broadband Size: L (4mb) During peak times, the top 5% on the Size: L package download at least 750MB of traffic each.
Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till midnight) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed their download speed will be set to 2Mb, with their upload speed set to 192Kb. This will last for 4 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.
Broadband Size: XL (20mb - old 10mb) During peak times, the top 5% on the Size: XL package download at least 3GB of traffic each.
Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till midnight) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed their download speed will be set to 5Mb, with their upload speed set to 256Kb. This will last for 4 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied. |

Can you get a refund if your connection gets throttled?? |

| Agreed. Even after I was connected back to the correct server for the speed, I am still way down on where we all should be.
As a result, I am giving consideration to downgrading to the lower M service level as this, for my purposes, will be more cost effective.

| These clowns are serious liars and what they are doing is fraudulent. They advertise unlimited 20 meg but if you read the small print that isn't what they are offering. They are throttling everyone. I havent downloaded more than 200 megs today and I am capped, same yesterday. What's even worse is they cap your upstream as well. I have written to Oftel about this and I will be pursuing it as this kind of thing cannot be allowed to continue. NTL has been a disaster since Virgin took over. If they cant offer the 20 meg download service they are advertising, they should not be advertising it. |

| reply to mrcrash Poor service, the introduction af "traffic management", and ongoing issues with Sky are the reason that Virgin media have lost 50 thousand customers since re-branding.

| reply to mrcrash Speaking with a few people in the know VM underestimated the demand for bandwidth that their upgrading people from 10 to 20Mbit would cause so are now in a situation where they are having to upgrade their network to cope with the increased load.
Usual symptoms of this congestion will be seeing slower inconsisten speeds at peak times which may or may not improve using newsgroups or other things which open several connections.
There's also the issue of people not having properly tweaked TCP settings, and also an issue with the equipment on the ex-ntl network causing people to not be able to max out their speeds with a single connection, a symptom of this being getting slow speeds on speedtests but being able to max out with newsgroups.
As far as Cableforum goes it's a rather pro-VM site. Its' news stories and posts from its' moderators suggest, being nearly universally pro-VM to the extent that bad news is basically ignored and news stories usually have a pro-VM slant where possible, and some vehemently anti the competition to VM.
Chetnet is run by current and ex VM employees, however is a good and constructive site. |

| Here's a slant on it...
As mentioned in previous post, I did indeed downgrade and have been billed accordingly (M) for the past few months. However, I continue to receive the higher speeds (L), the implication then that the billing was adjusted and the technical jiggery-pokery behind it remains untouched.
Fine by me |

| reply to mrcrash I do realise this thread's quite old now,but thought I'd bung my 2 pennyworth in anyway.
Check out the cablehell forums also,as they have a few VM employees who give their time freely to help whenever possible, though of course there are a few on there who'd swear black was white rather than criticize their paymasters.
I don't personally have too many problems with my 20Mb setup,as 99% of my d/l's are done overnight from Giganews, where I get a constant 18.7 - 19.2Mb d/l speed, but realise there are plenty out there who'd gladly form an orderly queue in order to strangle R.Branson & his cohorts....whoops,I almost said 'partners in crime'(allegedly)...whatever was I thinking ;o) |

Crazy, sort out the loading for 20Mb before you move on. |
