Re: Lightning

Can anything be done to fix this problem?

I recommend unplugging the computer system and unplugging the phone cord from the modem during lightning storms. Computer components generally do not like lightning. I have lost several cards and modems during lightning storms.

Either that, or get a good quality surge protector/UPS, but nothing beats unplugging your expensive equipment during a heavy thunderstorm. =] Free, efficient, but it can cost you some boredom. I usually leave my equipment on through storms, then again..we really haven't had anything strong at all in months, here.

I do have good-quality surge protectors (APC).

First, I do not run my phone line to the modem through them because that reduces the quality of my DSL connection.

Second, even though I know they are good protectors, I still do not trust them. I live on top of a large hill in central Alabama and we occasionally get some monstrous lightning strikes! I just feel safer with everything disconnected.

Losing components that are connected to more than one service could be a symptom of incorrect or missing bonds between those services.

I have never lost more than one component in any single event. Also, neighbors have lost refrigerators and televisions in addition to computer components.

I want one of those whole-house surge protectors, but I am too lazy to buy one and have an electrician install it.

I have checked the stats at the NID several times and they are almost identical.

I always unplug everything when a storm gets close, but the storms we had today were never that close to me...not close enough for any rain to fall in my area, but for over an hour I kept losing sync. I lose sync right before I hear thunder in the distance. The modem would resync for a few minutes then go through the cycle all over again.

I've also noticed in the last week or so I no longer on Max Sync....and my speed has dropped from 1.6mbps to 1.4 mbps.

Will a tech be able to locate the problem when there is no lightning in the area? The only time I have a problem is when there is lignting in the area.

When a tech checked my stats at the nid, he spotted a few problems: Bad drop, bad grounding, and 1 bridged tap. If you're able to get a tech to inspect your area, tell him that you lose sync often on the line, no matter when thunder is in the vicinity or not. My stats improved slightly (a few db less attenuation), but my connection held up much better in storms, but still lost sync on occasion. I had to switch to an old 2 Wire modem to solve this problem, as awkward as that may sound.

Bad storm heads my way, unplug all systems from power and isolate wireless router/dsl modem. Really like keeping an eye on the storm via radar on the internet so great time for wireless laptop on batteries. Worst case I'm out of dsl modem and wireless router. I'm betting and it's only a gut feel I could get the dsl modem replaced by AT+T for free; could be dead wrong about that. Any case a couple of hundred sure beat out several thousands. I've heard various stories how home owners insurances handles those cases. Have to admit using that setup my connection was solid as a rock -- never flinched.

Don't worry, a "whole house" protector will do very little to protect your phone circuits.

Is fire supposed to shoot out of it like that?

Actually it can do quite a bit to help by supressing a surge from power before it hits the modem and out the phone line.

That makes me feel better. I had FP&L put a "whole house" protector in a couple of years ago and wasn't quite sure how well it would actually work. I also use individual surge protectors for all my electronics.

I manufactured and sold surge protectors for many years and still remember the claims from customers that we had to pay for.

We had severe storms move through last night and the Netopia held sync till the storm was on top of us. These storms had an incredible about of lightning. We also had dime sized hail and over an inch of rain in 30 minutes! When the storm got bad I powered everything down and unplugged the AC and phone.

Aways a good idea, no matter what surge protection you have.

Update:

GREAT NEWS! I had thunderstorms all around me this afternoon, one lighten flash after another and I did not lose sync not one time. My friend who lives two house down from me, who still has a Westell 6100 modem, lost sync several times within a 30 minute period. I just don't understand it! I have had BellSouth/AT&T techs out here at my house several times, and they still could not find the problem. This had been going on for three years. I replaced my Westell 6100 for a Netopia 2241IN and it fixes my losing sync problem. Incredible!

Congratulations Gordon1fan! It worked for BOTH Of us. They really need to scrap the Westell 6100 and ship the Netopia 2241N to everybody. It even worked better when you have lower S/N ratios.

Seems like they reserve the Netopia for there 'more important' business customers. :-(

I guess you go around to some of these forums and correct people's spelling! Man, get a life!

I could almost agree with that. I swear, any kind of distant or nearby thunder is torture for my Westell 6100. My old, clunky 2Wire, however, doesn't have a problem with it.

=/ What am I gonna do though when I get Extreme 6.0 (if it EVER becomes available in my area), seeing as it uses the ADSL2+ standard (and with my luck, I'll need it)?

I'm like you, when the storms get to bad, (thats if I'm home) I unplug my computers, DSL modem and phone lines. Don't want to take any chances.
