What to do for my 7th ans.

Ever sit down on a Monday and realized how close you were to totally screwing up?

Turns out this weekend is my 7th anniversary. It's not a huge one, and I should have remembered since I got married in 2000 just so I wouldn't have to count years...

I'm for a loss on what to do for it though. I don't have much time to set anything up, and don't want to spend a huge amount.

Thought of going to Quebec, Quebec, but the hints I dropped were shot down. To far, scared of not understanding people... lame excuses but hey, I'll work on her.

Idea's please

just so you know, Quebec is a big tourist spot and most workers in restaurants and stores can speak english.

Traditional gift for 7th anniversary is wool or copper. My inclination would be cashmere sweater or some gourmet copper cookware.

As for weekend second honeymoon? Howabout a stay at one of the Casino hotels at Niagra Falls or Orillia? Not too pricey to pamper yourselves for a night or two...

My wife, my 6-month old son, and I went to Québec City last summer and we loved it. We stayed for four days but you can probably see everything worthwhile in three. In the old city, almost everyone speaks English. The places where we ran into folks that only spoke French was at a few stores in the St.Laurent shopping mall. We also were approached by an elderly couple in a McDonald's who we're oohing and aahing over the baby but we were able to talk with them with my ancient high-school French. And bottom line, dollars are dollars. Check out Montmorency Falls, the old city, the Citadel, the Plains of Abraham (15 minutes of fame)I would skip the Aquarium though, it's nowhere near as nice as MarineLand and some of the programs are in French only, but you do get the best view of the Quebec bridge there.

Don't let the language barrier stand in your way, it's an adventure and we're glad we took it. This year we're headed back to BC to see my family but next summer we'll go further east for a few weeks and check out the Maritimes. (10 years at the same company = 4 weeks vacation!)

We did Quebec City already.

My wife's using the Language Card, since she promised me she would not complain about how far our drive is. We normally have a 4 hour max car ride rule. Which she promised years ago to not apply to Surprise Anniversary trips.

Leaning towards a night in Ottawa since I now got roped into something for the family on Saturday.

If you change your mind, check out this thread for ideas about both Quebec City and Montreal (where you won't have a problem with language either). Hell, I ended up in the Lac St Jean area (which is a bastion of separatism, in case you didn't know) and when people found out I had travelled from Ontario they bent over backwards to be accommodating with whatever English they could muster. I'm bilingual so it wasn't a problem to switch to French but the folks up there were really friendly too.

If Quebec City is out of the question, what about Stratford, Niagara Falls/Niagara-on-the-Lake (Shaw Festival, butterfly conservatory, the Falls, etc) or perhaps to an old-school resort like Deerhurst, Montebello or perhaps a place on the St Lawrence like Isaiah Tubbs? I've been to all three and they are all beautiful (and all different from each other).

What I would do for an anniversary -- but only because I love this sort of thing -- is a getaway to a lodge up in Northern Ontario. You may have left it far too late for that, though, but worth checking around. My mind has gone blank about the various places I've been to, although some are too far for just a weekend -- but something like Deerhurst comes to mind.

My friend took his wife up there a couple of weeks ago. Very nice place.

We keep it simple too. Dinner and a movie. That's what we've been doing for the last 14 years. My wife is easy to please. She doesn't even want a card ("waste of money") And if we're lucky, we can get rid of the kids for a night.

Since you are booked for the Saturday but thinking about Ottawa why not do it Canada weekend? Ottawa throws a giant bash for Canada day.

Look up the Bostonian and book 2 nights there or even 1. I stayed there and it was EXCELLENT. Free wireless, nice size rooms, kitchenette, RIGHT on Bank St. And I think it was like 120 bucks?

Might be getting tight booking something for Canada day now but it would be better than going with nothing to do.

Last year a few people I know said "Were going to Ottawa for the day!" did more than 8 hours of driving total and what did they do in Ottawa? I'm not quite sure. Something about stopping at a newspaper stand? Make sure you plan at least something because while it is a nice place to go you also have to know what you want to do. Somewhat.

I love Ottawa on Canada Day. Awesome experience. Problem is, a co-worker books the July 1st weekend the next year on July 2nd, and we have a coverage rules.

Of course, he heads a 40 person camping event every July 1st.
