 | The union guy who installed my FIOS took about 90 minutes just to mount and wire up the power supply and battery backup unit. This is a half dozen holes in the wall, and a half dozen wires to screw down. Having never done it before I could have done it in less time. It should have taken him 30 minutes. I wonder what incentive there is to get the job done quickly, for a person who's being paid (handsomely) by the hour.
Also, the same guy out west who said "we are union too" went on to say "we don't place the service drops" because they are "pre-installed" -- YES, by non-union contractors! On the east coast Verizon must use union employees to lay the fiber, by the terms of the union contract. Perhaps that does indeed play a role in the faster installs on the west coast. I'm sure the "9 hours" figure includes placing the service drop. |

Some of you guys have ALL the answers. You can do it all.. faster, better, less mess, the list goes on and on.
Hey - when you call a plumber, electrician or carpenter to come to your home, maybe you should show EACH of them how to do their job even BETTER!
Don't stop there though - since you're the authority, be sure to train your doctor, attorney, auto mechanic, CATV tech and butcher.
We'd all be oh-so grateful to benefit from your "never having done it before" tutelage. -- United we bargain, Divided we beg! |

 | reply to bbarrett Since you even stated that you have never done it before, you have no idea whats invovled in mounting equipment.
Was it a concrete wall, if so , that takes alot more time than just screwing it to the wall. All the wires nicely tied up and terminated? If so the takes alot more time than just throwing it in.
The incentive is to get the job done not to get laid off. If we mess up or take to long there are 100's of more installers that will gladly take my job. |

O your a doctor, I could have removed that appendix in half the time you did, i could probably do 3 or 4 a day and I bet one of them will make it and survive.
Why dose it always have to be done quicker, what ever happened to do it right the first time, or if your going to do something do it right. |

I love it when someone says *I could do his job faster/better* when they've never done it.
It's always nice to feel superior from the other side of the fence. Maybe you'd like someone (not your boss) watching over your shoulder, getting in the way and critiquing you while you work? CWA Local 9400-San Diego CA I'm not speaking up against you, but there are *A LOT* of us here who could probably install it ourselves due to the tremendous amount of time spent talking about the installs here.
