Funny you say that as I remember decades ago when CableTV Providers promised no or limited ads to their subscribers and now you can not watch a show without a 5 minute ad block every 15 minutes. That lasted about a day and the ads have multiplied like Tribbles.
I do remember those days. I remember when a 3 minute commercial break was considered long. Now you get 5-7 minute breaks and as soon as the show starts again, they run ads for other shows across the bottom

Wow GK, you have actually found stations that you can watch for 15 minutes without a commercial break? Amazing! ... I can't

Yup, it's "Trouble with Tribbles" alright. Harry Mudd is running the ad agencies

I feel like im talking to a celebrity...or somebody important!
Shhhh, now don't be gossiping about this, but some folks must lead more than one life. Has anyone ever posted proof of seeing both rick752 See Profile and Johnny Depp on the same stage, or even just in the same room, at the same time? Both are the same height, play guitar, smash stuff up.... See .. Shhhhh....(or is that J.C. Holms)

Thanks Rick for all of your hard work!

I'm an ex-Filterset.G user as well and just like the author of Adblock Plus suggests I've found a couple of false positives myself. And when I whitelisted that site all the ads come up. Suggestions were taken with a grain of salt in the Filterset.G forums and I never got a resolution, so I ditched those filters and never looked back. Also Filterset.G updates are few and in between and rick752 See Profile updates a lot more often I'd bet once a day or at most once a week. I don't really know I'm just guessing there.

rick752 See Profile personally I can't take credit for the popularity of your filters, I think your hard work and dedication is what drives people towards your filters. Keep up the good work!
Same here. As I have said before, it seems that there is a major underlying difference in level of maturity, responsibility, understanding, and true care and concern for the users. It's a most welcome improvement, and I thank MCM, WP, Rick and all the other folks who moved this great project forward from the moribund state it was purposefully locked in. Thanks again folks!

A few Channels on DirectTV keep the commercials down to a minimum but I do not see that lasting more then another year or two tops before they are assimilated.

I tried to watch "Planet Earth" in it's Sigorney Weaver Discovery Channel incarnation, and gave up. The combination of commercial interruption, the insulting content of the commercials themselves, the poor Comcast video and audio quality, and then the constant "Branding" of the channel Logo (and the bleeding of the "Brand" logo), plus the constant further visual pollution of the "crawl", all made it an absurdly degraded experience. (The HDcast was rumored to have less intrusions.)

When a quick check at IMBd.com showed that the entire series would be released on DVD in it's original form (David Attenborough's narration), with-in weeks, the choice was, umm, clear.

In the 1/2 hour of "The Daily Show" (for one example), once you subtract (rough numbers) at least seven minutes for commercials, plus the "intro", and the "lead-ins" from each commercial break (applause, jib-camera non-sense), how much content is left? 20 minutes? 19? The amount of "good", is simply simply not worth it to me to wade through the spewage.

I don't have TiVo, nor DVR, but renting commercial "TV" shows and series on DVD has solved all this. It's so much more enjoyable to experience great shows straight through, with good video and audio, and with none of the interruptions which totally destroy any chance of the "suspension of disbelief" that those who worked to create these shows may have actually achieved.

This method obviously doesn't help until the DVDs are available, and has a cost associated with, but can greatly reduce expose to what is arguably, and unfortunately the most developed "content" on TV, Commercials. What to do about, Theaters, Airlines....

Now, if I could only figure out why every "Wiseguy" disc so far sufferers from various degrees of serious video break-up , I could continue with Vinnie, Frank, Lifeguard, Sonny, Mel (The Toes Knows"), Eli (Jerry Lewis), Winston (Tim Curry) ...

Quick question...how do i set my AdBlock Plus to check for updates regularly? Right now it seems like it only updates when i do it manually! How would i go about setting it to check for updates once a day?

Now it would be good if Rick would respond to this...because he is the creator of the 3 subscriptions i currently have..so he would know when the updates come out

The easy way would be to just resubscribe to Ricks filters and check the autoupdate box.

According to my filters:

EasyList Filter updated by rick on 17Jun07
Element Filter updated by rick on 16Jun07
---------------------------------------------------
Try deleting the filters and resubscribe then.

Check in a day or two and see if Rick sent an update through.

You have the most interesting avatars ... is that a leaf waving?

I've got to admit the one on Gladiator is the most bizarre and interesting one that I've ever seen. What IS that?

Here it is Jesse:
If the 'update automatically' option is on for the EasyList, EasyElement, and ABP Tracking Filter, they will only update every 5 days or after the previous 'updated' date ... and then ONLY after 5 minutes of use after the program containing ABP is used. This was done to keep bandwidth down (20 gig of EasyList last month).

To check the autoupdate option, you can go to the filter list box ... right-click the "Filter subscription" name ... select "Edit subscription" .... and check to see if it is set to "Update automatically". The "Update automatically" option comes up when you select a subscription to add (it came up when you selected the subscriptions origially). If you simply continued, was the default setting then when you first selected each subscription.

I decided to unsubscribe and then resubscribe to the subscriptions just to be sure. And every 5 days? That seems a little long

Btw, in case you didn't know ... the last time YOU updated (or WERE updated) is shown in each subscription in the highlighted part shown above. The last time the SUBSCRIPTION itself was updated (my modification of it) is shown above the mouse pointer. The subscription will update automatically after 5 days whether I have made a change or not.

And anytime you can always do a manual update if you feel the need to.

The lists work well now so I don't really have any HUGE updates usually ... something here ... something there. Mostly for the Tracking Filter as people seem to be getting more paranoid about privacy invasion 'tracking' these days and don't want it anymore ... especially with it being in the tech news so much lately.

Some worthless history:
The ABP Tracking Filter was an idea that I started a while back that started off simply as a way to get some of those kind of filters out of my easylist because some people thought it wasn't right to block stats and tracking in an ad filter. But I still wanted to offer those, so lo' and behold the Tracking Filter was born. The author of Cedric's Liste (a French subscription) liked the idea too, so he he joined me in making it so he could get rid of the same complaints on HIS list too and just offer the Tracking Filter as an option (that's why it's not called EasyTrack or something like that).

I think the ABP Tracking Filter may actually become as big as the EasyList in time. It's the only filter I use in Thunderbird. I don't mind images in my email as long as most tracking and 'pinging' is blocked. I feel much better with the Tracking Filter in there.

Rick - how do I enable just the Tracking Filter subscription in Thunderbird?

tia

edit - never mind - I figured it out. I did it manually though, copying the url from my Fx setup. Is there an easier way? Thanks, Rick.
