Re: [FireFox] Adblock Plus Filter Subscriptions?

Hey, kingb71 .... I didn't recognize you at first (thanx for the kudos).

What happened to 'talonkarrde'? Time for a change? Trying to hide from the FBI or something?
ha ha, thankfully they won't chase me here in Canada!
nah, I lost interest in the handle & changed it to one I use elsewhere!

Quick question...how do i set my AdBlock Plus to check for updates regularly? Right now it seems like it only updates when i do it manually! How would i go about setting it to check for updates once a day?

Now it would be good if Rick would respond to this...because he is the creator of the 3 subscriptions i currently have..so he would know when the updates come out

The easy way would be to just resubscribe to Ricks filters and check the autoupdate box.

According to my filters:

EasyList Filter updated by rick on 17Jun07
Element Filter updated by rick on 16Jun07
---------------------------------------------------
Try deleting the filters and resubscribe then.

Check in a day or two and see if Rick sent an update through.

Here it is Jesse:
If the 'update automatically' option is on for the EasyList, EasyElement, and ABP Tracking Filter, they will only update every 5 days or after the previous 'updated' date ... and then ONLY after 5 minutes of use after the program containing ABP is used. This was done to keep bandwidth down (20 gig of EasyList last month).

To check the autoupdate option, you can go to the filter list box ... right-click the "Filter subscription" name ... select "Edit subscription" .... and check to see if it is set to "Update automatically". The "Update automatically" option comes up when you select a subscription to add (it came up when you selected the subscriptions origially). If you simply continued, was the default setting then when you first selected each subscription.

I decided to unsubscribe and then resubscribe to the subscriptions just to be sure. And every 5 days? That seems a little long

Btw, in case you didn't know ... the last time YOU updated (or WERE updated) is shown in each subscription in the highlighted part shown above. The last time the SUBSCRIPTION itself was updated (my modification of it) is shown above the mouse pointer. The subscription will update automatically after 5 days whether I have made a change or not.

And anytime you can always do a manual update if you feel the need to.

The lists work well now so I don't really have any HUGE updates usually ... something here ... something there. Mostly for the Tracking Filter as people seem to be getting more paranoid about privacy invasion 'tracking' these days and don't want it anymore ... especially with it being in the tech news so much lately.

Some worthless history:
The ABP Tracking Filter was an idea that I started a while back that started off simply as a way to get some of those kind of filters out of my easylist because some people thought it wasn't right to block stats and tracking in an ad filter. But I still wanted to offer those, so lo' and behold the Tracking Filter was born. The author of Cedric's Liste (a French subscription) liked the idea too, so he he joined me in making it so he could get rid of the same complaints on HIS list too and just offer the Tracking Filter as an option (that's why it's not called EasyTrack or something like that).

I think the ABP Tracking Filter may actually become as big as the EasyList in time. It's the only filter I use in Thunderbird. I don't mind images in my email as long as most tracking and 'pinging' is blocked. I feel much better with the Tracking Filter in there.

Rick - how do I enable just the Tracking Filter subscription in Thunderbird?

tia

edit - never mind - I figured it out. I did it manually though, copying the url from my Fx setup. Is there an easier way? Thanks, Rick.

In ABP "Preferences" (in Thunderbird):

FILTERS .... 'Add filter subscription' ... then under "Filter list location, just add:

http://easylist.adblockplus.org/abp-tracking-filter.txt

Oops, just missed you edit.

No there isn't an easier way. You can't use the auto-install links in T-bird unless someone emailed them to you (would they?) Fortunately you only have manually do it once.

rick, can you explain why I would need the ABP & tracking filters enabled in Thunderbird? Is it to block huge images?
I don't think I get much of that via email tbh....

I use ABP in Tb just to block the random ads some companies I allow to email me embed in their correspondence.

Blockbuster, BMG etc...

Other then that ABP is hardly noticed.

hmmm...I usually direct all that stuff to a gmail account that I don't access via POP with TB, but just access via fx
Ok, so then I really have no need for that.
Thanks for the clarification GK!

Your welcome.

I am the opposite and direct all my web mail to Tb. Yahoo, Gmail, etc...
