Good bye AT&T

'Sad to see a famous company in decline. They've thrown away any chance they had at beating the competition (but hey -- aren't they BIG!)

How are they in decline? They are the leading broadband provider in the US.

He always has to post something negative when it comes to AT&T, regardless if it has any relevancy of the news article...Just look at his post history.

All the cool kids are doing it...

What we are missing is the usual NSA punchline.

"leading"??? -- in what way? -- subscriptions?. They also have the lowest maximum speeds of any other major terrestrial broadband provider (i.e. cable). Technology-wise they're in decline. DOCSIS 3 will finish'm off

AT&T offers higher speeds than Embarq. At Embarq 5.0M is the highest speed tier available. When I first signed up with them (when it was Sprint) I was paying for 512kbps what AT&T (then SBC) customers where paying for 1.5M.

Their POTS revenue is in the crapper. They are selling DSL at a loss. And they have no meaningful upgrade plan in place a la fios.

It's a house of cards that is only standing because

A) they have a lot of cash and

B) they have used that cash to buy a lot of lobbying and

C) They own the enviable "legacy" AT&T backbone and

D) have government and large enterprise contracts because of that enviable backbone and these contracts generate a lot of cash which allows them to steal market share by selling services at a loss, buy yet more lobbyists etc. etc.

They're better than Qwest, most people only have the option of 1.5Mbps.

Qwest is major, I wish AT&T would buy them.

Wow, selling at a loss? I'd love to see where you got the misinformation from, because you are so incorrect about that.

So you really believe that cable companies are going to burn down their entire structure of DOCSIS 1.1 and build DOCSIS 3.0 compliant plant in 2 years?

Funny you bring that up.

Now, if all the non-sense AT&T has been whining about since 1996, about how it is being forced to sell services at a loss to CLECs that won't build their own infrastructure...then, I have to presume that at $14.95, AT&T is taking a loss on DSL.

Or, AT&T was lying about the CLEC pricing all these years and their cost really is less than what they were charging.

Which one is it?

...and while you're at it, also ask some AT&T partner ISPs what their wholesale cost is that they are paying AT&T for line-share loops.

The main cost of DSL is the equipment. CLEC's certainly know that. Guess what happens when equipment gets old?

Not in decline?
What do you call a company now in such a position as they have to give their service away for this kind of price?

Good God...they're now on par with NetZero.

Consumers are NOT stupid..(for the most part)...
They understand how to ADD.

And the addition looks like THIS.

Twenty dollars for a pots line that no one in their right mind wants anymore...

+

10~15.00 for this slow as molasses DSL service...

Equals, what people can get for TWENTY times and more theses kinds of speeds now on services like Comcasts.

We all know the TRUTH about how many people can't even get DSL, never mind the lowest tier which so many are forced to put up with because of the distance factors.

And, we all KNOW that when people can get 6MB DSL, it's really only 5.2 something factoring in overhead.

And, we all KNOW that when AT&T reaches that tier level, then people wind up paying the same as cable, except with many cable providers you STILL get 3 x's those speeds...

and we all KNOW that AT&T's pathetic answer to all this is Uverse, which still has them trying to rely on those old copper lines buried all over the country.

Uverses subscriber numbers so far are HORRIBLE. Is it any wonder why people now don't want their HDTV delivered to them over that rusting out copper?

What exactly do you see here that isn't "in decline"?
This company is a disaster now and unless they do something quick besides trying to buy more companies to cover up all this..they are headed to one very gigantic fall IMHO.

In case you haven't visited them yet, you'd better run over to the OOL forum..the Cox forum..the Comcast forum....and others.

These cable companies are eating AT&T's lunch, sticking a knife into this company, and watching them bleed to death.

AT&T's phone business and DSL business might very well not be around in 5 years if this keeps up!

They'd better QUICKLY do something!

Well do you think they sell more to CLECs or to actual end users? If you think they sell more to CLECs, then you are mistaken.

So now that you've submitted circumstantial and opinionated evidence, do you have any number or figures to support that AT&T is in decline.
I think this price offering is smart, and I've actually held the belief that ISPs should be doing this for about 4 years now.
This pricing is not intended to win over Cable users. It is intended to win over dial-up users. There are a good amount of people out there that are on dial-up and are perfectly happy. They check there e-mail a few times a week and maybe get some stock updates. Nothing major. 768kbps is more than what they need, and at $10/month there is no reason for anyone within AT&Ts reach to stay on dial-up.
Even though people can get much faster connection on Cable (and for most on DSL as well) it will cost them a premium. A premium they are not willing to pay for speeds they do not need or want.
This is only a sign that AT&T is willing to be creative in their effort to be competitive.
Can you show me something substantive to support the idea they are in decline. Dropping stocks, dropping customers, dropping profit margins? Something, anything?
