Re: Surpass related.. not fun

I least I won't be blame if the server decides to go down again.. this is how it all starts.

What are the specs on this box? What kind of sites are you running?

If you're using anything other than a dual core / dual CPU box to run sites that eat a total of 20+mbps of bandwidth, you're probably screwing yourself over...

Edit: Wait, you were running this on a shared server? L5.

its one of the newest boxes.. it suppose to have all the good stuff..

Yet it can't stay online for a full week..
I have another account to balance the load and that one has been good for the last couple weeks..
This is just not cool.. 4TB package and can't even go above 1TB.. And it's not like im hosting appz or warez, these are video files and a picture gallery.
Plus it's not even me causing this its been random problems, like a stuck email or some locked up process causing the meltdowns..

My gallery caused the latest incident, it was down for hours and when it came back up I loaded some pictures, they were seen apparently 'by too many people' and caused the server to spike up.. OK?? So i close shop because people want to see some pictures after hours of downtime?

With that kind of site, it's probably you causing the problems. 4TB of bandwidth doesn't mean that you can rum amock on the server and use as many CPU and memory resources as you'd like -- this has to be limited because you are hosting in a shared environment, with at least 100 other sites hosted on the same box.

Your site definitely needs to be on a dedicated server if you're pushing 20+mbps of bandwidth... I can't see how Surpass is to blame for this issue.

You agreed to this when you signed up. Honestly, I don't see any validity to this complaint. Your site should not have been on a shared (or reseller) box to begin with.

So they shouldn't sell 4TB period.. Like you can ever even get close to using it..

What got me suspended it my photo gallery.. I sure hope no more than 2 people are using a Coopermine photo gallery on the same box, its over for Surpass.
I'm not going to commit more money to Surpass with this kind of service.
If I were the problem for a 14 hour service interruption I believed they would of said something.. I don't think there is any more excuses you can come up for Surpass, I was quite happy with them too, until recently.

Sure you can -- just not when you have tons of people (30mbps worth... damn, that's a lot of bandwidth) hitting a MySQL driven site. That'll send any server to its knees when you have other sites hosted on the same box.

How many pictures do you have in your gallery? Better yet, what's the URL to your site? I bet you have an unusually huge amount of pictures, or you just have tons of people hitting the site. 30mbps of bandwidth would suggest the latter.

So how is this justified?? I'm suspended.. So its not me..

Its okay, I know you've had the service for a long time and you're one of the biggest Surpass Promoters in this forum, I can understand your biased.

All I know is that Surpass has been having some issues in the last couple of days as this board can show...

It's possible that there are more issues on the box that need to be addressed. But I can guarantee you that your site was causing an issue; the graphs you posted kill your entire complaint.

Not really. Their support really dropped the ball for me several times -- they definitely need to improve in some areas. Even I'll admit that.

And it's not even my history with Surpass that has anything to do with this. I've worked in Abuse before for another very large web host, so I know firsthand what kind of pressure high-traffic gallery sites can put on servers. I've suspended/disabled hundreds of them, myself, for the same reason.

Obviously since the last spike is for less than 5 mbps.

30mbps at peak will kill anything -- that alone probably sent MySQL load through the roof, and is probably why they suspended you to begin with.

Okay lets pretend that was the issue...
But the sites is doing on avg.. no more than 10 mbps as it shows before it went down for 14 hours.. and before I was suspended... the site experience a large volume of users because it was DOWN for 14 hours..

If 10mbps is ohh soo much for Surpass I better call back my previous host, had no problem with them..

TOTC - you noticed the server having slowdowns because of your own site.

That is why your site was suspended.

Normally we disable the folder or file in question, but in this cause the site was suspended. Issues are different from server to server, so we can not always promise shutting off part of a site versus suspending a site.

In your ticket in our helpdesk, you replied: "A picture suspends me?"

What caused the site to be suspended was your 18% memory usage when the limit on a shared server is 10%. Only 5 sites on a server usually get even close to 10%. (Really even close to 2%. So 18 is a big number in this situation.) I hope you can understand it better now.

^ That is not normal. And not good for the server and the other accounts on it. It's not even good for your site - because again, you yourself noticed the slowness.

Coppermine is not the most friendly photo gallery - we recommend to use a different application. We are always, always, seeing problems with Coppermine. We aren't a fan. We understand you may be - but on our side of things, it's not the best.

I am unsuspending the site and disabling the gallery from view. Please let us know in the ticket if you plan to change the gallery or happen to know of some tweaks to make it perform any better.

Well what are some of the other choices approved by Surpass, I mean I figured since it was a Fantastico install and it was up to date it would be no problem..
I am willing to work with you guys since I never had a major issue except the stuff out of your control.

The problem is - high traffic + Coppermine.

Coppermine installations that are not this popular do not really cause an issue. We see issues with certain combinations.

Some have recommended that you get a dedicated - I would have to honestly agree with that. Or at least a VPS.

Or you can try migrating the images to another application and go from there as we monitor the server.

This is definitely your problem and not surpass's. Using 4TB of bandwidth is completely different from using 4TB of Database driven bandwidth. For a high end server, simply pushing files via http doesn't cause much of a problem, but when every single file has to be called via sql and php, this is where you see the problems of CPU and memory usage. I have a similar high traffic database driven site on a VPS and it is a world of difference because you are GUARANTEED resources. Also, as was already said coppermine doesn't handle high traffic sites very well.

Re: Gallery problem..

If coppermine is so terrible and surpass does not want people to use it, it should not be available to activate.

Coppermine isn't terrible, it's just not very efficient when dealing with a high traffic site. It's fine for galleries that deal with fairly low traffic levels. Personally I am using Coppermine at the moment, I just find that layout is somewhat more appealing to end users than Gallery 1 (which I was using prior to Coppermine). However I am experimenting with Gallery 2 just to see.

There are thousands of Coppermine installations running quietly within our network. It's only when serious comment spam comes into play or just high traffic that photo galleries can wreak havoc on shared servers. Some photo galleries can withstand more abuse than others, we've noticed Coppermine seems to crumble first. We are working on a guide to help clients narrow down which ones are better options.
