If you can trust someone to run a trace to your IP or try it from your work you can quickly tell if the notice is legit or not.

Use the "Traceroute" under "Hostname Test". You can just plug in the IP address from the letter; but you have to respond to pings. Because a cable modem is a bridge, that means configuration of either router, or firewall.

But none of that has anything to do with your other vague statements "Make sure the dns is the right one for your house" and "That DNS is the last hope anyone will see if they trace your current IP address back to you" which are apparently a reference to the often meaningless pseudo hostname assigned by an ISP to an end user's dynamic IP address. :uhh:

Here are a few examples which have been discussed in this forum which illustrate the arbitrary text strings which may be used as a pseudo hostname for a dynamic IP assigned to an end user (or even a router or switch), and why those values would be meaningless in a judicial proceeding.

The text string that is used for the pseudo hostname assigned to an end user's dynamic IP address is totally meaningless. It can be whatever the network tech who keys it in wants it to be (in fact there is no requirement for a hostname at all). In the case of a national ISP like Comcast, even the semi-traditional city-state part of that text string is only accurate if someone bothers to change it when the associated IP address block is moved from San Francisco to Chicago to Boston as frequently happens. The only thing that matters in the case of a copyright infringement notification is if the ISP's database says that the IP address in question was assigned to a specific user on the date/time in question (and good luck proving that it was not assigned to you if the ISP says it was). Maybe that would be a good reason to use the DSLR 24/7 line monitoring service, but that could be a two edge sword if it proved the the IP address in question actually was in use by you during the time in question.

Reading through this notice, there's several oddities. The first being the actual file name. The eztv tracker will almost always be limited to actual EZTV files, and something named as atrociously as this one, plus being part of another "scene" would never have been on their tracker. Secondly is the file size. Standard HDTV rip of an hour program is right around 360mb-380mb, not 700mb+. Third is the time in question. That was right in the middle of some of the worst of my issues with comcast, multiple disconnects per day, extremely slow speeds, etc. There's no way I was going to try to pick up anything I'd consider necessary like a back episode of Heroes with my connection on the fritz. There's also the fact that when this supposedly ended, I was actually at work being harassed by idiot customers who can't read price labels. Fourth, and this is the funny part, the last activity in my Heroes folder was back on March 7th. The last activity for this particular episode was back in late 2006. That and the file in question is no where to be found. Not on any drives, not on any temp drives, not on any removable media.

Now, before anyone gets wonky about my connection, it's a secured wireless network, WPA2, and it's secured with a ridiculously long password that I don't remember, but it's about 25-30 characters and fairly random. Yes it is shared by two other computers in the house, however, in my attempts to fix my connection, I'd disabled the wireless for about 2-3 weeks, and this falls squarely in the middle.

All in all, I'm going to take this notice pretty lightly, as I don't have the file, and have never had the file on my computer. All I see out of this is that they found someone torrenting off an IP address, with completely wrong info mind you, and they didn't try to research it far enough and just slapped the last person that had the IP address, whether or not I actually had it during that time. I'd have no problem allowing someone to look for that specific file, and that file only, on my hard drive, even using software that pulls files from the dead, as it has never been on any of my computers. Anything else will require another notice delineating a specific filename. :)
