[NE] Google server farm in Council Bluffs - COX country

Today, Google formally announced a $600 million server farm, on 180 acres, south of Council Bluffs in the Omaha Metro area... COX country.

Is there any chance Google's project could add an internet peering point for COX in the Omaha area?

Another similar project was announced in northeast Oklahoma.

Just a guess and a Wild one at that but For google to work it needs direct access to the backbone and would likely have multi connects in and out.

If I remember right Omaha was listed as a regional data center for Cox when the Cox backbone map was listed awhile ago.

The newer map is here:

Adding an internet peering point in Omaha would make sense, I think that is what people are suggesting here.

I wounder why they would have a RDC in Omaha in one map then in a newer map the Omaha area is just a listed as a cox location.

Old Level 3 Datacenter SHHHH!
I would assume Google would use their own dark fiber to back haul to a POP.

You always hear about all the fiber in Omaha because of SAC however in the public sector it's hard to come by.

Other than the FNBO data center and some small private data centers (Cosentry) we really have no internet presence here.

Well there is that one 90,000 sq ft one in Miracle Hills without any signage on it and has no phone number, if Cox wanted to peer to Level 3 back in the death of @home this would have been the place, and only a few blocks away!

While it's possible that Cox may end up with some link to Google in Omaha (either commercial or otherwise), it's not going to become a "Peering" location. Those are well established and I haven't seen any moves by the Internet community to expand upon them in the US. The primary "NAPs" are in LA, SF, Seattle, Chicago, Dallas, NYC, Ashburn, and Atlanta. We are at all NAPs except Seattle. There's a lesser NAP in Miami that caters to connections to Central and South America.

Re: [NE] Google server farm in Council Bluffs - COX country

would there really be a need to make it a pop .. what benefits would it have ??

and if im correct isn't cox's network leased AT&T Bandwidth .. which would mean the cox network has Extreme amounts of capacity. not to mention the peering points ...

little off topic .. but i wish cox had someway to re-route everything from cogent thru level 3 then to me .. or i guess the Ash pop. i swear cogents network is congested like a mofo

but it is Google tho..
