| Re: Rediculous Speeds, Simply Rediculous. HELP!!! While it's most likely something has become overloaded, could you check your signal levels [if available] and post them as well: »192.168.100.1
I would recommend PMing CoxTOC1 at this time (General residential). CoxTech1 is currently on vacation.
I don't believe I've ever seen MGA_SOC, Smurf doesn't make too many appearences.

My levels are high ,at least the downstream anyways, but it's been that high for months now with no problems and in a couple hours it will be the same and my speeds will be back to normalish. PapaSmurf told me to IM MGA_SOC when I have problems they are strictly in the Middle Georgia area and it shows them logging in every day but not reading their IM's.

| correct me if im wrong but your downstream power level is weak and maybe the cause,do these levels stay the same when you connection is fine.
i feel you pain im running into the same issues, between 830pm and 1030pm my down load goes to 900kbs and uplaod is 1mb yet my levels are pefrect and no drops or packet loss,i have just been waiting for the data engineers to find something

2 edits | Re: Rediculous Speeds, Simply Rediculous. HELP!!! Actually my downstream is high at +14dbmv it used to be right at 0 which is ideal but it's always like that even now when my speeds are back to normal.
Hmm just a thought but my modem logs have my modem changing channels from 2 to 1 at 11pm, Could that be the problem that Channel 2 is FUBAR? Never heard anything of the sorts but it wouldn't suprise me.

Any higher and his modem will not be able to sync.

| said by m8trix :well first thing a tech is most likely want to do is improve the signal strength on the downstream, this could be a bad splitter or to many splits It doesn't need to be improved, +15dBmV is a level near 40 times stronger than necessary. While this is nearing too strong, there's really no need to attenuate it.
Modems work fine directly off the tap with signal levels around +15-20 dBmV DSPwr, +25-35 dBmV USPwr.

| dont you want to be as close to zero as possible whether you are on the positive or negative side.hes at +14 putting him at the outter edge of where you want to be...
Downstream Received Power: the DOCSIS specification requires cable modems to function correctly with downstream power levels in the range -15 dBmV to +15 dBmV: power readings at or close to those extremes are likely to be unacceptable.Generally, power level should be between -5db and +5db for best performace

The generally accepted value for DSPwr is 0 dBmV +/- 10 dB, while USPwr is ideal at 40 dBmV , +/- 10 dB.
As it stands, the Moto's handle an overly strong signal very well (The original post looks like a SB5120). It's not uncommon for Cox to test a line with a Moto directly at the tap, without attenuating the signal, and have significantly stronger signal levels than that without consequence.
I will agree that if there is a line amp on the premises causing the signal to be at those levels, it should be removed. Futhermore, if the modem loses sync during the periods of slow connectivity or there is a substansial increase in the power level during these periods, that would indicate a signal problem.

| Re: Rediculous Speeds, Simply Rediculous. HELP!!! The power level is consistant during the day and night when its bad and good the levels are the same. I do have a Motorola SB5120 also. There is no inline amplifier in place and I have 2 splitters one when the signal comes into the house to go to 2 different rooms and the other in my room with it going to the Cable and Modem. | |

SNR is 35db and above Tx is 35 to 52 dBmV Rx is -15 to 15 dBmV
Are the current acceptable signal levels.

1 edit | Re: Rediculous Speeds, Simply Rediculous. HELP!!! I'll take a modem with a TX of 35dBmV over 50dBmV in Phoenix any day. The contractors keep aiming for 50dBmV in the winter, then the minute summer hits people seem to drop like flies with TX levels of 55dBmV+.
Given that the 'solution' to a modem with a TX power of less than 35dBmV is to get it to 40+dBmV with an attenuator, why not just let the modem, which is perfectly capable of doing so, transmit at 35dBmV if the CMTS tells it to?

There's work being done to the system to hopefully correct that issue through the use of automatic gain controllers.

| Re: Rediculous Speeds, Simply Rediculous. HELP!!! So far tonight speeds are good. I'm keeping an eye on them. Right now my Levels are good too better than last night....The downstream is at +10dbmv instead of +14 or +15 and the upstream is at +45dbmv. I guess time will tell if it is going to stay this way or not. MGA_SOC got back with me so I won't bother to schedule a tech. roll out as they will handle it. | |

| YAY my speeds suck again, Don't know what it is about Sunday nights heh but it's always the start of something bad....
Does anyone know what this means?
Downloading anything with a single connection is much slower than it should be BUT when I'm downloading from a newsgroup such as Giganews where I get max speeds usually if I use one connection it bounces around really slow then when I use 20 connections it now is steady at max speed over 12mbps but its the only way I get max speed. Wouldn't that mean that it's more of a quality of service issue then a speed issue? Like I'm losing packets or something?

| We have performed work in your area last night to try and correct the problem you have been experiencing. We also have a technician who will be checking your signal at the street this evening. He will also be performing a speed test from the street during the time frame you mentioned earlier. Your signal levels have improved drastically since last night. Your RX is averaging at +3 and your TX at +44. We apologize for the problem you have been experiencing, and we will keep working diligently until this issue has been resolved. We will check back with you tomorrow to see if the last 2 nights corrections have made any difference in your speed. | |

| Re: Rediculous Speeds, Simply Rediculous. HELP!!! Yeah my signal levels are cool now at 3dbmv or so downstream and 44dbmv upstream, now there's just the issue of the unbelievably slow evening speeds...AKA I can't get 3mb bandwidth on a speedtest or download faster than 200kb off like ftp optonline. Normally I hit 15k-18k with speedboost when it isn't evening hours on Speedtest.net and then between 1500-2100kbps on FTP Optonline. So it's well below the norm but if I check it after midnight it will be much better and getting better. | |
