I can't understand who would deploy regular wifi in a mesh network like this, wimax works so much better.
Really...?!!

I was unaware that there were so many Wimax deployments...

Are you or anybody aware of ANY Wi-Max deployments anywhere ? Would seem that Wi-Max is really Fleece-Max. There are no deployments anywhere due to it's basic non-functionality.

This ISP utilizes WiMax in my area. Can't comment on it's reliability first hand, but people seem to like it.

Maybe not where you live, but we've had it in Canada for a while. Basically same service as clearwire. »www.shoprogers.com/store/cable/I···JKFQ3QM2

You can say that but Clearwire's technology is the base of WiMax and is almost exactly the same to what the final standard will be for WiMax and to the average person there is no difference.

It has a different PHY than Wimax.

Thanks for the links. Neither site specifically states whether they use Wi-Max or some other wireless technology. Sympatico sounded suspiciously possible with their 3 mbit limit and 5 mile range. Are we using the term "Wi-Max" loosely to describe wireless in general ? Not tying to split hairs, just curious. I have never heard of any commercial deployments of real Wi-Max. Even so, 3 mbits with an indoor self install is not too bad whether it is real Wi-Max or 900 Mhz Motorola canopy.
