Here | I haven't got a letter yet and I stream things constantly to it on EDGE. Typically in the boonies I'll get dialup speeds but in a fairly dense area I'll get around 200kb reliably. | |

| I think Apple went with EDGE because of battery life. There is a fair amount of HSDPA or UMTs in the US. My Hermes Tytn has 3g in plenty of spots in the US.
I'm not sure whether EVDO has better battery life than WCDMA. I'd note that the new Hermes iPhone competitor is also in EDGE. | |

If Apple wanted faster speeds, they could have stayed with cingular and just added 3G to their phones. Who knows, maybe like in some macs with Wireless-N, 3G is there ,and just needs to be enabled via software.

| Japan and S. Korea have nationwide CDMA/CDMA2000 and Mainland China, Hong-Kong, Thailand and a few other countries have limited CDMA coverage, as well as Australia and New Zealand.
The CDMA/CDMA2000 of Japan is incompatible with others and dual-mode phones are only sold in Japan. (au users can roam on Verizon using those phones but VZW users can't roam on au because of that) | |

BTW if you are in a 3G area the data rates are 1Meg symmetric( Los Angeles) or even 2 Meg in the enhanced areas (Phoenix)

The geek factor seems pretty high on it, but it's just not for me. Its unlimited, as they have locked down the phone
