[OT] Botched iPhone Demo on Today

Leave it to Meredith Vieira to take a lot of built up hype and dump a bucket of water on this fire.

This morning I was watching a segment this morning on iPhone and they had several on set. Lauer was in London and just happened to be calling in on one of them when mental giant Meredith couldn't figure out how to answer the damn thing.

I couldn't believe my eyes...then the stoopid biotch started blaming the device. I guess we have to create a new acronym...PEBKAC now becomes PEWB (problem exists within brain).

Edit: THEN to add insult to injury, they show a 5-min segement on what MS is doing to complete with iPhone. What else would you expect from MSNBC I guess? I noticed that the tape didn't break while they were playing that clip.

Edit #2: here's the YouTube link since apparently you can't even watch the video from the link that I posted on a Mac. GD you MSNBC!

I created an acronym some time ago called PEBTE - Problem exists between the ears.

They probably edited that clip on a Mac and that's why it went so flawlessly.

Pretty hard to not know how to answer a call.. the big green button labeled "Answer" might have helped her figure it out.

Non-tech savvy people have a hard time figuring these things out. From what I have seen, they use computers and devices basically by mentally recording coordinates of buttons. They are completely incapable of figuring things out by analogy.

Bingo. It's like my grandmother. She doesn't understand that the "Power" button her TV remote turns the TV on and off... she understands that the Top-Left circular green button turns the TV on and off, which she then applies to all remotes and ends up not knowing WTF to do.

LOL, this was a prop call set up for the show. There was no "phone call placed" and even if there was one, she answered the phone using the correct Answer button. The problem is the show tech didn't turn off the fake ring noise.

It was a skit, an act, a piece of flummery for TV. The iPhone was not receiving a call from London, by someone that just magically found a desk style phone sitting on a park bench. It was just a stage cue that was missed.

Whatever...I watched it happen and the phone she was holding was not a prop since the screen changed on it.

A prop call. A skit. A joke. A bit. Pretty funny that you are all bent out of shape over it. Where is your sense of humor?

Anyone see what happened on FoxNews this morning. The lady was interviewing some guy from Newsweek that had gotten an iPhone early and some punk kid walked up behind them and grabbed her microphone! He tried to run away but was gang tackled by a bunch of dudes. Even the anchors were like "why didn't he try to grab the iPhone?" Friggin' strange.

Oh my gosh, I agree with you 100%. I am simply amazed at how many people I see at work using their computers and they are so unorganized in how they use the programs, I mean it's like they're completely lost all the time. What really gets me is watching people use the right click to copy, then right clicking again to paste something. I just want to smack them in the back of their head and tell them to use the freakin' keyboard for something as easy as copy/paste. I think this is why I'm so much faster at work than others...because I can use the mouse in combination with the keyboard. Maybe this skill comes from my Marathon Playing days...

You do realize that Apple has done majoe product placement deals with NBC shows including Saturday Night Live, right? Or did you not realize that Nick Burns preferred Apple?

It's a prop call. It is also only a phone, not a cure for cancer. It's also a stupid host on a brainless show. Who cares?

Seen Studio 60? Although in last week's episode, they had a flashback to 2001, and showed a lamp iMac and when they showed a close-up of the screen, you can see the blue Spotlight icon at the top-right. Hmm... they must have had an advanced Beta of 10.4.

On the CNBC On The Money show they did a full hour of iPhone coverage starting with live shots of the first person into an ATT store in Chicago. Towards the end of the hours they showed the screw up on the Today show. I think the CNBC folks were a bit bent out of shape that they couldn't get an iPhone to play with on the air today.
