I'm waiting for the first iPhone related car accident...

Because its coming...

The iPhone has no keypad and no voice dialing... so you HAVE to look at the thing if you use it in the car. iPhone + dumbass owner = road hazard.

I was thinking as I saw some of the iNerds on TV tonight (has anyone else noticed that they seem to be mostly unwashed uber-nerds?) and I realized that I can dial my phone faster, bring up contacts faster, play thousands of Java games, play music (drag and drop mp3s right on the phone), take and playback both photos and video and my phone cost me nothing with the contract (Sony w600i). In less than a year, I'll have a new phone with the latest and greatest features, also for zero additional dollars.

Maybe they should call the iPhone owners iFools?

Any phone plus dumbass owner = road hazard. As a motorcyclist who rides 600 miles a week to and from work, I can attest to this fact.

All phone use in cars should be banned, hands free or otherwise.

I really have to agree with you right there. When I got my PPC-6700, I didn't realize how much of a difference using that thing while driving was. I'm to the point now that I only dial a number when I'm at a stop, and hesitate to answer while driving.

Not only that, look how many accidents happen due to people texting while driving. Imagine how much worse it will become when people don't have any "feedback" other than visual.

Maybe it was good to price it out of the range of the roads most dangerous drivers.

What do you mean? Have you seen the coverage of the first buyers? These are people spending an entire month's welfare check on a phone. It doesn't get much dumber than that.

I think I shall call them iTards.

Studies have proven that talking on a cellphone impairs driving skill, concentration and reaction time to the same level as a drunk driver. Mythbusters also tested this and their results agreed. To the people who think "hands free" phones are the answer, they aren't.

All this is just the TALKING part. The dialing, looking at your phone etc part is MUCH WORSE.

Basically, 4 words.... "HANG UP AND DRIVE."

Wouldn't that suggest talking to passengers or singing with the radio/listening to talk radio/adjusting it just as dangerous? What makes the phone part of the equation so important?

As dangerous as the Iphonecan be, one can rest assured that most all the original iphone purchasers carry automobile insurance.

Apple should have also released a super-easy-to-use while driving bluetooth earpiece that releases pleasant fragrances when I fart.

Kudos to that comment!

It's all hype, and being the 'coolest' with the new toy.

I'll stick with my laptop for all those goodies, and my cell does most of what the iPhone does with a few button presses.

A valid question. Any distraction is not helpful while driving... distractions that make you take your eyes off the road are of course very bad... Things like trying to pick up objects / read something (Directions/Map/Address book etc)... There are MANY accidents that have been caused by people taking their eyes off the road to mess with their radios and stereos....

However, merely listening to the Radio isn't nearly as distracting, as you don't have to think too much about it, it's a passive activity.

Mythbusters hypothesized (and it makes sense) that it is the amount of concentration an activity takes that increases it's effects on your driving.... mere idle chit-chat is less distracting then say trying to conduct business or work over the phone because you're having to think and solve problems and drive at the same time.

Basically, anything that takes concentration will degrade your attention to your driving, and taking your eyes off the road is dangerous period.
