ST546v6 - How to Open the Casing (Push...)

ST546v6 - How to Open the Casing (..and Lift)

OKay, here's for Angelo's tutorial!

Start near the power-switch corner, then the front one from the same side.

A screwdriver and a thin/rigid metal blade are required...

Push gently, only use necessary force or you'll break an anchor.

Hi there.

I'm comparing several router backup files and trying to understand them.

For those who are sending me the files please add a text file with the router details. That info can be obtained thought the speedtouch upgrade utility and starts like this:

_COMPANY_NAME=THOMSON
_COMPANY_URL=http://www.thomson.net
_PROD_NAME=SpeedTouch
_PROD_URL=http://www.speedtouch.com
_PROD_DESCRIPTION=DSL Internet Gateway Device
_PROD_NUMBER=585
_BOARD_SERIAL_NBR=0713JE5EW
(....)

My mail to send files to: cidirome@hotmail.com

Best Regards.

Cidi, are you able to decompress the firmware?

Hi there.

I've made some improvements to the application, I should not detect correctly more different flash chips from the ST5x6 series.

If your chip is not correctly detected please send me the reference to check.

Get the new version here:

Best Regards.

Hi Cidi Rome,

As you can imagine, i couldn't stay away from that
page so 'ST5xx EJTAG Debrick Utility v1.0d' is now
saved!  Some details attracted my attention, allow
me to make a couple suggestions.  Once you decided
it's the definitive tool, call it 'ST5xx.Exe' then
join 'ST5xx.C'/'ST5xx.H', 'Makefile', 'ReadMe.TXT'
plus the 'GiveIO.Sys'/'LoadDrv.Exe' helpers if you
like.  I'm sorry but i wouldn't inlcude 'JTAG.png'
in the package unless there are safety directives:
i search around for an intuitive Circuit Simulator
which might help me sort out the safety issues and
those of the unbuffered interface are the worst...

Thank you for your contribution over this tool, in
any case!  The ST owners will appreciate having it
when the time has come and maybe the 3Com, TP-Link
ones too, eventually.  Did you notice the later is
using a Flash chip just half the size, by the way?

Hi there.

Bicephale, as you already know I have to disagree with you.

Every one that is going to try this kind of things already know that it has risks and for me, the usage of the passive JTAG schematic is not one of the worst. In my opinion you can do more damage with wrong connections then you can with this interface.

About the utility, I like the name as it is, I'm not saying that I'll not change it later, but in the meantime it's ok.
About the .c and .h, I will send it by mail to everyone who is interested on it. The provided tools only work on linux, to compile it on Windows is more difficult so the target public of the source is very little, only the ones with minimal linux knowledge and availability or others with advanced knowledge on windows and programing.

I'm working on this two routers for about one month and I have to admit this forum was a good start, but know is not helping much. You seem to keep delaying what really matters.

I will keep coming here to tell my achievements but at this time I'm not expecting much from here.

If you don't want users to have access to my utility, remove the link, but those who already know it, can go there and check for newer versions with corrections or improvements.

Best Regards.

Hi Cidi Rome,

I wasn't in a hurry when i started this thread and
i'm still not, my initial goal isn't to favour the
collection of Flash images in order to unlock some
ISP branded FirmWare...  We can all understand why
you are impatient and angry but don't expect me to
support any JTAG adaptor if it's not totally safe.

Our priorities are not incompatible, feel free not
to help by contributing with other aspects of this
project if that's how you feel but the best advice
you can get from me is to ensure the readers won't
have to wonder about any grey zone such as safety.

Lets put 1st things 1st, perhaps it seemed trivial
to you when i showed how the ST546v6 can be opened
without breaking its fragile plastic clamps but it
is one item which tells our readers we care.  It's
OKay to be worried about erroneous connections and
i concur, i still welcome your cooperation over an
electric signature which the SpeedTouch owners and
maybe even a few others (3Com, TP-Link) can use to
comfort themselves that's the right thing to do...

I have no desire to obstruct even if you think the
ST owners aren't worthy enough to get source-code.

I wish to make this as user-friendly as it can be,
can i count on you or must i wait for someone else
to help with features meant to seduce the readers?

Hi there.

Don't put words in my mouth that I didn't said.
I said: "I will send it by mail to everyone who is interested on it", and I will not waste my little free time, putting the source files in the package every time I make a new version available.
As you know I have already put one version of the source, maybe in some time I'll put other ones.

About the seduction part, you already know what most of the users really want, and I'm sure that it is not to spend a value in parts that is close to the price of a new router in order to be able to recover it latter (if needed)....

Best Regards.

Hi Cidi Rome,

10 days ago i wrote that "i'll get a BackUp of the
Flash contents because i must and i will" and then
i published pictures which show to the world how i
managed to open the casing of my ST546 - and hence
the warranty is now void, explicitly.  I hate when
i have to repeat myself, don't make me once again.

THE READERS ARE WARNED NOT TO USE THE "UNBUFFERED"
OR "PASSIVE" ADAPTOR
, it's not wise to put a MoDem
at risk this way and especially when one considers
no safety directives have ever been made available
until now nor have any corrections been published!

I advise the readers not to make assumptions about
their pieces of HardWare.  Play safe and have fun.

Oups!  And it's not just the MoDem, PC damage$ have been reported too.

Even with any other kind a JTAG interface, there will always be risks...

I can predict that you will never backup your router, I say that when you overcome the risks you are talking now, you will find others, so it will never be safe for you.

Best Regards.

Hi Cidi Rome,

Now it seems you're really frustrated but wait for
this: I ALSO ADVISE AGAINST MAKING SERIAL NUMBERS
PUBLIC!
Oh, i'll get my BackUp all right but only
when it suits me and certainly not for someone who
may as well be at the origin of an elaborate hoax.

About the serial numbers, I surely agree with you, and I've said that before you.

About the rest you said, I have to say you are hilarious.

hello
i built and used the JTAG adaptor from Cidi Rome
worked without problems !!!

what I am missing here is
a short summry (with parts list) how to built an aktive or BUFFERED JTAG adaptor

the postings shows a lot of informationes
but for people and also for me which are not experts
in electrical it´s difficult to understand

best regards
fenster

Hi,

Five volts thru 100 Ω that's 50 mA, 3.3 Volts thru
the same resistor makes it 33 mA.  Both the PC and
the MoDem are made of high integration chips where
the safety limits are most likely inferior to what
they used to be when discrete parts were used;  as
a result, it might be questionable to target 20 mA
since 5 mA is probably more suitable as a limit...

Lets add to this risk the dangers of submitting an
input to over-voltage & over-current while there's
no power applied to the corresponding circuit, not
to mention that few of us can tell what technology
lies behind, actually.  I hardly find it hilarious
when some people ask others to gamble on expensive
HardWare, don't count on me to overlook elementary
safety precautions, it's no contest for me!  I see
that your sustained controversial attitude is only
a sign that no further cooperation is possible, so
be it.  As Fenster pointed out, it can be puzzling
enough for most of us to deceipher schematics when
the documentation is unclear or even missing;  i'm
not surprized at all so that's why i'll contribute
with what i can as i prefer addition to exclusion.

About expensive..

We are talking here of a router that costs 25 Euros (ST516v6), I bet that your secure JTAG tool, by the scenario we are seeing here, will cost more than that.

Best Regards.
