| Vista - WPA2 Enterprise - wont retain username/password
Running Vista Home Basic on my Dell E1505.
Laptop connects fine manually but on startup, it wont connect on its own and when I do connect manually it asks me everytime for my username and password. Any way to get it to retain my credentials?
I've already setup my network profile with the following settings:
Connect automatically when network in range
Connect even if the network is not broadcasting
Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network.
Using WPA2-Enterprise PEAP
Thanks in advance for any help or thoughts.

Cache user information for subsequent connections to the network
This control specifies that when you log off, your credential data is removed from the registry. The result is that when you log on again, you are prompted for your username and password. |

With the option checked why would Vista not retain the settings in the registry?

| Nope thats not working either. My daughter has the same laptop but with a Intel Wlan card and she connects fine, mine is a Dell/Broadcom. I'm starting to think its some kind of incompatibility issue. I'm going to update the wlan card and hopefully it will solve this problem.

I'm going to bump this despite it being old, because I've got the same problem; my school uses a PEAP-authenticated network, and Vista makes me type in my credentials EVERY TIME I connect. The "remember" checkbox is disabled.
This would only be merely annoying if it didn't also re-ask my credentials when it momentarily lost connection and reconnected. When in spotty coverage areas, this can mean having to re-enter my login info every few minutes.
Turning on the "cache user information [...]" setting solves this temporarily, except when I then move the laptop to a different area on campus, the machine won't log in again AT ALL until I disable that option to flush the cache. So obviously this cache isn't a real option.
So, I'll re-iterate the original question; does anybody know how to get Vista to *permanently* remember PEAP login settings?

| I would delete the wireless profile, reboot the computer, and then re-enter all of the profile information.
I don't have a computer running Vista at the present time. I ran several tests 9-10 months ago using Vista RC1 with a FreeRADIUS server setup for PEAP authentication. I did not have to enter my username and password every time I connected to the access point. My memory is that the "Cache ..." control should be enabled for the computer to remember the username/password information, but I might be wrong. |

| The problem with the cache is that it's invalid as soon as you move to a different access point on the same network, which prevents your computer from connecting at all unless you disable the cache. This is a problem when moving around campus during the day. What I really need is to be able to simply have Vista remember the password; it doens't have any place to enter the login credentials before connecting. It does the old "Additional information is required to connect to this network" (or whatever) balloon popup.

1. Right click the wireless icon in the tray, and select "Connect to a network"
2. Select "Set up a connection or network" near the bottom of the dialog box
3. Select "Manually connect to a wireless network" option in the dialog box
4. Enter the information for the wireless network you want to add
5. Click Next
6. Select "Change connection setting"
7. Enter the remaining connection and security information |

When I select 802.1x for the security (since it's PEAP), there is no other provision to enter security-related information, save for going into the properties of the profile afterwards and selecting additional required options, like what server to auth to and what certificate to use.

I just reread your post. You should not select 802.1x. 802.1x is used for dynamic WEP. The correct selection is WPA-Enterprise, or WPA2-Enterprise. |

| The school doesn't use WPA. They use WEP 802.1x and PEAP for auth.
My point is that while the OP was using WPA2 Enterprise, it's the same issue I'm having.

2 edits | Seems Guspaz there is no way to avoid entering your credentials every time. I finally got fed up and I stopped using PEAP on my Vista client and swiched to TTLS using SecureW2 and its working great now. PEAP and Vista just doesnt work properly and I'm still waiting for Juniper to kick out a Vista compatible Odyssey Access Client so I can make use of PEAP again, or if Microsoft should kick out a patch but I wont hold my breath. |

i have the same problem, i use dell d830 with the b/g/n card, i forget the model. Mine does it all the time also, vista is a real piece. i even have intel pro wireless program from dell also.
If i goto manage network connections goto properties on a network name there is a checkbox for "use intel wirless" it occasionally works if i sit int the area it is for about 20 then it'll kick in.
vista is a piece. hope they come out with a service pack soon. |

| If you can easily deploy Enterprise Class Security than why not use it over WPA2 Personal?
Point of the matter is Vista was released with a serious PEAP bug and after 9 months of being released has yet to be fixed. While I can switch authentication protocols on my personal LAN to something else to avoid the issue, this problem affects myself and quite a number of other Vista users who are required to use PEAP elsewhere at work, or at school.

During these tests, the Vista wireless client connected to the P-334WT router automatically. It did not require manual assistance, or re-entry of my username or password.
Before the tests, I verified that all of the standard Vista updates were installed. I also installed one hotfix mentioned by dslpartner in the ZyXEL forum. The hotfix prevents the DHCP problem described in:

The problem occurs because Vista occasionally forgets the default gateway setting when the computer sleeps.
There is another potential Vista DHCP problem. In some cases, the Vista client cannot acquire an IP lease from a DHCP server, while the XP client works properly. This problem can occur because the Vista client handles the Broadcast flag in the DHCP Discovery message different than the XP client. The following article describes the problem in detail:

I have not applied this change.
During the tests, I also checked the settings of the Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network control. Enable this control to save the username and password. Disable this control to require entry of the username and password during every login. |

| Thanks jbibe for your persistence. I've downloaded the hotfix and will install and perform the registry edit tonight or tomorrow and get back to you on the results. I've been trying to figure out this problem specific to my system for a while, friend of mine uses the same radius server as I do and he doesnt have this issue.
I checked my automatic windows update history and that hotfix isnt in there, could be the culprit to the reason why I'm the only one left with this problem.
