PCWorld published a story that would suggest hacking the device isn't going to take much longer - Hacker: Unlocked iPhones Coming in One Week or Less.

Canada, QC		 Historically Apple has turned a blind eye to hacking. My guess is they can't officially encourage it, but let's face it, it boosts sales to have a product that can be user modified / adapted.
