Surprise...

If this becomes the case, just watch, over night the use of encryption on the net will skyrocket. ISPs don't have the computing resources to crack most of the encryption algorithms out there in real time in order to catch and stop encrypted packets. So, all the really determined pirates have to do is encrypt away.

Save the Internet Time (NTP) service, use the pool.

I eagerly await the day when all traffic is encrypted anyway. I'm always paranoid about my data moving around in the open, regardless of the content.

How am I naive? I never said I didn't think encryption can't be broken. Given the choice of broadcasting completely in the open or broadcasting encrypted packets with a low chance of interception, I'll still take encryption thanks. Nothing in this life is completely secure, but in my mind using or not using encryption is akin to locking or not locking your doors when you leave your home.

Have you seen the video for Lock bumping?

Generally it would be considered naive to presume that your are simply safer using Encryption (or a lock) vs. Not using.

A supercomputer is capable of encrypting a 4.7GB dvd in a split second, and as a result with live, parallel, desktop monitoring, decryption is a thing of the past for those who want to spy, and those who want to spy on random people at random intervals. The likely-hood of you getting spied upon is is tenfold when you start using encryption. That gives them probable cause to suspect you are trying to protect information that may be harmful to national security. Encryption is nothing to them. They have your keys , they have your data.

That's certainly an interesting and lucid opinion. "Tinfoils to the ready" indeed; you paint a rather bleak outlook for network security in general. Mind you, I don't disagree with any particular point you've made; clearly the government has many ways to determine what you're doing online. It's those nefarious third party (non-government) individuals that I'd like to maintain some semblance of privacy against. Futile? Perhaps. My opinion is still that encryption is far better than transmitting sensitive information in the clear though.

Not that it applied here in the US, but did you know that in the UK for example if you fail to disclose passwords or keys to investigators, you can be imprisoned for two years just for that.

The only reason the US doesn't do that is because they already have a backdoor, and don't need your keys. They monitor traffic at the level before it becomes encrypted. And the secret courts give them the authority to do so without a warrant, and using encryption as said before actually marks your traffic as suspect, and thus more likely to get decrypted.

I respect your opinion, I just don't agree with the fact that encryption is any safer.
