| [Lens] DIY tilt/shift - take 2 I've made some progress since »DIY tilt/shift
Materials used: 1) vinyl fabric (fabric store, cheap by the yard) 2) JB Weld glue (hardware store) 3) M42 adapter (already had a bunch) 4) Bronica mount (from broken camera) 5) some washers and nuts (hardware store) 6) some steel wire (hardware store)
I glued some nuts and washers to the M42 mount to form a groove around the circumference. I did something similar to the Bronica mount. I cut the fabric in a circle, put the M42 mount in the middle, then pulled the fabric up around it. Steel wire then cinched it in place. Now I can cut the middle and fold it back. I attached the Bronica mount similarly with steel wire. Doing it this way means there's no seam to worry about.

This is a medium format lens... dirt cheap and, as you'll see, extremely sharp.

Note the steel lever/button... this stops down the lens. Awesome! I can focus wide open, stop down, shoot.

A K-mount to M42 adapter... cheap on ebay. I was going to use part of an old lens but this was flatter and easier to use.

The Bronica mount stripped from a broken camera. This will make it easy for me to attach other Bronica lenses if I find any.
One problem I've found is that everything is too flexible and the fabric sometimes bunches inwards, blocking the light path... however, it's still a LOT of fun.
Now onto some sample shots! Not all really illustrate tilt/shift, though...

By the way, that is right up my alley. I have a Prinzflex 28mm f2.8 that might work for this. -- Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. |

| I'll post a complete pic when I get home.
Your 28mm likely won't do a satisfying job since it's built for a 35mm camera...
1) the image circle is not large enough. Medium format is good since there's a ton of coverage allowing lots of tilt and shift room.
2) Many (all?) MF systems also have about 2x the registration distance which gives room for stuff (mount adapters, tube material/fabric) while still allowing for infinity focus.
A large format lens might be even better but it's tough to find a cheap one at a focal length I'd like... a normal lens for large format is pretty long when used with 35mm systems. I'd prefer 40-50mm but that's wide for medium format and super-wide for large format... IOW, expensive. Spending more than $50 is expensive (to me) since Lensbabies aren't much more than that (even though they don't really shift much... mostly tilt). -- My Site |

I did some more shots with it today... exceedingly difficult with moving subjects at close range! Eg:
